AD/DA convertors

I'm not necessarily trying to make a step up, just need a couple more channels of decent A/D and I can easily ad 2 more using the digital input on the Lynx. At this point my mic cabinet needs more work before any converter upgrade will make sense...

Lynx II C here. Lynx for D/A also. I'm quietly waiting to get a Benchmark DAC-1, but I'm pretty content until then. I'm also considering adding another 2 channel A/D for 8 channels simultaneously. Recenlty I've been thinking about the ART DIO thingy, but now that I think about it, the Lucid card would probably be a better deal... even for relatively inconsequential channels like toms.

Jim Williams of audio upgrades has a Mod for the lynxtwo that increases the noise floor slightly but improves transient response in the highs and speeds up the sleuth rate(whatever that means) end result is a sweeter high end and tighter bass at least thats what this one guy said(Rob Darling) when he got his done...its only 200 too...he replaces the opamps or something with the ones in the mytek converters

I've heard a lot about the Lucid convertors, I know Blue Bear uses them, but if I'm not mistaken, the only 8 channel they make is 48K. So to step up to 96K with the Lucid's, you have to do it in stereo pairs. Plus, isn't there no light-pipe interface on the Lucid's 96k's?

I just got a 2nd hand Lucid ad 2408 and wanted to get you're opinions on the beast. Did I choose wisely?

I use:

Lexicon MPX-500 Focusrite Trakmaster Echo Mia Roland M-1000 Roland XV-5050 Line 6 Pod XTPro Roland MMP2 - all with seemingly good (to my ear)converters.

In fact, I defy anyone to pick the character of A/D and D/A converters at all.
In a side by side, against an Apogee, you probably can, but generally, they offer less "character" and noticable signal alteration than the analog devices of 20 year ago. Even USB is comparatively clean.

If you can hear the difference in A/Ds, you probably should spend more time focusing on the stuff that more often has greater weaknesses - like arrangements and material.
 
Been looking at some 1 or 2 channel high quality AD DA unit, how does the mini-me by apogee compare to others? Kinda hard to believe that for 1100,- I'm getting 2 channel preamp, compressor and conversion in apogee quality... is there a catch? better things around? RNC and RNP seem great too... but no conversion... (and oh yeah, f**k the drummer, he 'll have to do with my old HDR.. LOL.)

Well - the stock converters on the Alesis Masterlink are actually quite decent... but A/B'ing them with the Lucids shows a stunning and very obvious difference in sound quality......... so yes, one can DEFINITELY hear the difference in converters, at least, I know *I* can - maybe your ears need sharpening! :p ;)

Lucid is threatening to have a new 96/88.2 compatable converter out by the fall... we'll see if it becomes a reality or not.

My Yamaha O1V has convertors.
A/B those against the Nuendo 8i/o's and I can hear a difference.

here's a thread which compared the A/D conversion of Lynx2 and a Delta 66 tell me you can't hear the difference...if you can't your monitoring chain needs a serious upgrade or your ears....

Well perhaps my ears *are* shot. Possibly from playing 7 days a week for about 15 years next to a drum riser and a 7 piece horn section.

I have developed the skill of transcribing every note I hear in a recording. So the ears still kind of work, at least for arranging purposes.

I guess I meant that I haven't really heard shabby converters or a marked good/bad contrast between converters in the gear I use (Perhaps all my current converters are equally bad <g>).

.....except for a Soundblaster card I had once, that had a tinny SP/DIF sound.

YMMV.
 
Delta 44.... not fancy, but works for me....
(HINT: There are new drivers available for at M-Audio's site...)
 
Actually, I mistyped - I picked up a Lucid AD 8824, not a 2408.

Any opinions on this piece?

it should be better then any soundcard except maybe the lynx2, if you got it sub 1K i'd say you got a decent deal

yes, the stienburg nuendo 8 I/0 is the RME ADI-8 Pro packaged in blue/grey for Nuendo!

when you say hit them pretty hard, are you saying that the inputs of the Nuendo goes into the red at times?
