Active or Bi-Amped

I'm about to pull the wallet out (again) and get me some "real" monitors.

JFYI, I did have a pair of JBL 4400 series monitors back in the mid 80s (about $500 each).

I don't have lots of money (like I did back then) and would rather not spend more than $500 pr.

I COULD spend a LITTLE more, but I'm concerned with the price/performance point.

My thoughts are this:

Active monitors would be the best solution, but I want the most sound/performance from my system which to me means bi-amped. (am I wrong?)
I'm thinking a lower wattage/smaller coned bi-amped system would out perform a full range system.

So, am I right...is there a big differencce in quality/performance?

Should I go bi-amped?

It's really a case by case thing. I had the Event 20/20 bas, which were bi-amped. My buddy had the non bi-amped version of the same thing (20/20p). There was a difference, but his seemed smoother at the crossover points.

I've had the exact opposite happen with a different set of monitors and the same circumstances.

I think the implementation of the crossovers will affect the sound more than whether or not it's bi-amped.

Just get the ones that sound good to you, it doesn't matter how they get it to sound good, as long as it does.

have to agrre with jay here... unless you're talking about BIG monitors bi amping aint that bigga deal for passives in particular... alotta the small power stuff will be biamped though... i can recommend highly the tannopy reveal series... i haave a pair of the originals and love them... although some will say they lack bottom... i say they have a controlled bottom...(tight)

um, bi-amped monitors are active. What exactly is the question here?

I'm looking into getting a pair of Yamaha HS50M's I would think that a bi amped set up would be good for you. You can go on Junkbay for about 150 each with free shipping. Check it out.

The Yamaha HS80M's are the ones that I keep going back to.

I don't trust Mackie, Behringer, Alesis or M-Audio. They're all second rate in my book.
JBL is another brand I really like (had some before)
Never had much else memorable.
Yamaha seems like the most balanced system (price wise) and I've always liked Yamaha speakers.
I guess I should have asked:
Which would you buy?
These? http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.co...BiAmplified-Powered-Studio-Monitor?sku=580378
Or these? http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-HS80M-8-Powered-Studio-Monitor-Each?sku=601418
Or do you have a better alternative? A name I'm not familiar with perhaps? (That wouldn't be hard come up with)

BTW, when I say "Active or Bi-Amped", I mean... two amps or one amp per monitor?

I think I'm gonna go bi-amp, just for the extra headroom... I'm thinking the transient highs should be more present and crisp.
At least, that's the experience I've have at gigs, running bi/tri-amped P.A. systems.
Or is this a misconception?

I can always buy one monitor at a time..that way the $350 per can be spread out. I'll just have to suffer for a month or two. :(

I'll pretend I'm the Beatles and all I have is a mono recorder. :D
