All these monitors were found at Musiciansfriend.com. If you had to choose from this selection, what would you pick and why? I'm trying to decide on one of these. I listed the price because this is the range i have to choose in. If you have one of these monitors, please indicate how happy you are with them and any other comments you'd like to add. I am leaning more towards the Tannoy ProtoJ with the Hafler TA1100 amp. Thank you very much.

How could you leave out the Mackie HR824's???????
The Mackies are one of the best pair you can get for your money.

They are about 1200 a pair but it's worth the extra money to get them.

i have seen and read about the Mackie HR824's, but i really don't have the $$ to buy them..found a pair on Ebay for $1,000, they seem really nice. maybe someday in the future...for now i'll have to settle for a more reasonable pair...of the choices, what would you recommend? thanks for the response

Well OK.
If you can't afford the 824's then I say out of that group to go with the Event 20/20 ps8. KRK's suck.. Roland sucks. Yamaha's are just ok. I'd say the Events would be the best out of that group.

Also, Mackie makes an HR624 model now that is probably a couple hundred bucks cheaper than the 824.. the woofer is a little smaller so you won't get the same awesome bass response but you'll still get a super flat response.

if you have the extra $$$ to spring for the JBL LSR25P's thats the way Id go...when i bought my monitors, the JBLS were more and i got a heck of a deal on my ProtoJ's and Hafler (about $325 together).......

Behringer price incorrect

Yeah, I'd too vote for the Events, based on what I heard from other folks and the specs. I have to wait 'till summer when I can go audition them.

The Behringer Truth price seems far too high, what I've heard is that they'll go for around $400 a pair!
AT least that's what they cost here in Holland ($413 a pair!)

I will definately hold every monitor I'll test against the Behringers! I HAVE heard those, A/B-ed them vs. Spirit Absolute 2, Yamaha MSP 5 and Genelec 1030a's (last one isn't fair, I know)

The Behringers came out best for me, although the little Yamaha's, lacking bassresponse, did have a better detailed mid range than the Truths.

But Truth vs. any Genelec (apart from those 1029 farts! ;) )
is not fair, and revealing THE TRUTH! :D Then it comes clear that the Behringers have hyped highs and lows, and the mid is pretty much unclear.
Still, they are worth their money (or can you find a nicer monitor, with that power (150W Low, 75W High) and all those tailoring switches and the cool looks? My girlfriend liked the looks of the Truths better than the Genelecs and Mackies.... )

I hope to hear some more insights about the Events though.
cheerz,

HR624

I just want to second the previous recomendation for the Mackie HR624's. I picked up the 824's a couple weeks ago, but I got a chance to do a side-by-side comparison with them and the 624's (they're demoing them at GC now). The only difference is in the REALLY low bass, and in the room they were in, the difference was practically inaudible.

I don't know thing one about monitors, but if you believe all the good press the 824's have enjoyed and would consider them except for their price, give the 624's a listen. Honestly, I have a funny feeling that the 624's are going to get be labeled as better than the 824's, if only due to their immense sonic similarities, and the 624's lower price.

Heh...Similar story...my wife bought our Truths cuz she hated the NS10s we were mixing on! Our mixes have improved tenfold, too!

the Truths should be around $400 in the US, they can be had for £285 here in the UK.

Re: HR624

Wow.. I haven't had a chance to hear the 624's yet but I had a sneaking suspicion that they were going to be very high quality just like the 824's. I bet if you combined the 624's with the new Mackie active sub it would be totally awesome.

I like the Events....

But I agree I' LIKE to have the Mackie 824's...

Haven't heard the 624's yet...

Neither are on your list....

1st choice - Meyer HD-1s
2nd choice - KRK V8s

I purchased a pair of the Truth monitors here stateside for less than $400. I compared the sounds of most the monitors above and liked the Truth the best. So far no problems, well worth the bucks.

I only had an opportunity to listen to three models when I bought mine:

3rd place - Roland DA-50 - I didin't really like them. They didn't sound like I expected a monitor to sound, like they were closer to stereo speakers.

2nd place - Yamaha MSP5 - They sounded OK, but I thought the mids/highs were kind of exaggerated. Also it didin't sound like they had tight, clear lows.

1st place - JBL LSR25P - I just liked the way they sounded. It didn't seem like they exaggerated or undertated anything. Even though the amps had about double the power of the Yamaha's they didn't have their volume level, but I don't know that's such a big deal.

Until now I either used the generic speakers that came with the PC or (gasp!) headphones. So far I'm very happy with my JBLs but they ARE my first set of real monitors and I've only had them about three weeks. I'm still in the early stage of learning them but the mixes I've done so far seemed to translate pretty well to my home stereo and my car stereo.

Hey blue bear; have you seen what the guy over on pro rec thinks of those KRK V8's:

: personally, the biggest disappointment of the bunch. The best thing I can say for them is that they'll play real loud.

Conclusion of article: http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articl...7ee658e1cba3a77e86256ae10015266a?OpenDocument

At the end of the day it's what your ears like.

I think I'm personally going to pick up a pair of the Mackie 824's in hte next month or so; I'd wait for the 624's but by the time they come out over in the UK I'll have finished my current project (hopefully anyway).

Yup - I saw it... I don't know what moniotrs Rip was auditioning, his comments certainly don't reflect that of the KRK V8s to MY ears!

OTOH - he likes the DynaAudios and I don't....

Just goes to show you how subjective speaker selection really is, and how useless a review is in deciding on a pair of monitors!

I would think you could buy any monitor system you wanted within your budget. It all comes down to mixing and knowing your monitors and room. I personally use event 20/20 and alesis m1's. I like them both. The 20/20's are my favorite but it took awhile (10-12 mix's) to finally get a good mix. So buy what you can afford and get use to them.

Yeah... that's pretty much it!

There is more to it.......

Monitors should also be chosen acourding to your room acoustics.
A small room will NOT benefit from a huge low response (no matter how good) of a monitor.
A room with problematic low response will benefit from a smaller freq response then a larger one.

If I had to choose monitors I would take that into serious consideration.
