You also need to choose a monitor that you can listen to for extended periods of time.

There is more to it.......

Monitors should also be chosen acourding to your room acoustics.
A small room will NOT benefit from a huge low response (no matter how good) of a monitor.
A room with problematic low response will benefit from a smaller freq response then a larger one.

If I had to choose monitors I would take that into serious consideration.
Agreed... I was being a bit simplistic - maybe too much.

I agree 100% and that's what I was saying. You have to think about your budget, the room and the future also, are you always going to be mixing in the room your in now or are you moving next month. I've moved my studio 3 times in 7 yrs and every time I had to get readjusted to the room. So when buying think of the future also.

For less expensive smaller monitors, I liked the JBL LSR25p's. You included the Behringer Truths at the high end. I'd suggest actually going with the Roland DS-90a's. They are slightly more for a pair, but sound the best to me. These were my choice after listening to many, including most of what was on your list. Of course, the Mackie HR824's would have been my ultimate choice, but like you, I wasn't prepared to shell out over 1G for a pair of speakers. Instead, when I bought the DS-90a's last year, I only shelled out ....$950. However, seriously consider making the purchase on eBay. You can get them for alot less from time to time.

Wow Bruce, you are the first person I know of that doesn't like the Dynaudio's:D

What about the Yamaha NS-10's? I saw them babies on Ebay for around $900. Control room matters too, I mix in my bedroom with nothing treated, creating it difficult to mix.

Talk about digging up the dead. This thread is really old.

I don't care for Dynaudio monitors either for the record. Lack of front porting makes them bass indistinct.

behringer is in the lead
im gonna run out and get some right now

Just to clarify, my Dynaudio monitors most certainly have front ports:)

Yes, but not the ones in his price range. I believe you have to go to the BMA15s which are $2500 last time I checked.

Maybe the BM5s but those are passive.

I think the Dynaudios BM6s would be a better choice than the Mackie HR824s or 624s. Although yes the BM6s arnt very defined in the high bass low mids which is why i upgraded to the BM15s, they still translate very very well. Where as i couldnt get the HR824s to translate worth shit.

But i guess thats subjective. And i havnt tried any other of the recommended really. But i stand by the Dynaudios BM6s. I hear the BM5s are doing great too, especially the active ones.

Danny

They make both Passive and active in all their line that I am aware of. I know that both the BM6's and the BM15's have ports. I would bet the BM5's do as well. The BM5a's run for about $1000 USD a pair, and the Bm6's are about $850 a pair, and the BM15's are about $1100 a pair. I have yet to hear anything that even comes close in that price range.

Yamaha NS-10's.
They got for much less than $900 on EBay, I bid on a pair, a few weeks back, which went for $475

WOA?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

dammit, don't pay 500$ for a pair of ns10's

Agreed. It's much cheaper to pay $5 for a pair of bricks that you can bash against your skull. Though the NS10s will give you a headache faster...

:D

G.

P.S. NS10 lovers, please put down your pitchforks and torches. I was kidding. The bricks will give you a headache faster.

Another vote for the 20/20 PS8's. Or save the bucks and get the HR824's. Check out the Event TR-8 XL's if you can they are my favorite price-to-performance monitor so far.

Used Behringer Truths (the first generation series which seems to be exempt from the problems the latest batches have) which were fine for nearfield monitoring.
Moved up to KRK V88s (not in your poll) which are totally awesome for big bottom (talk about bum cakes my girl's got 'em ;) ) and clarity across the spectrum.
Problem is I now have to sit well back from the desk in order to hear the mix properly .
Guess I need a bigger studio :D

I just auditioned like 10 pairs at GC over the weekend. this is what I thought:

mackie hr824's: too much bass and a bit muddy
alesis: muddy as hell
dynaudio bm6: not enough bass
m-audio bx-5a's: sucked
event SP8s: okay
KRK 8"s or something: smooth and non-fatiguing but not very accurate either
genelec 8020's: the only one worth upgrading to from my m-audio bx8s. clear and crisp.

This is a bit harsh and in all honesty I could turn out a mix on any of them, they were all okay. I didn't have the option of doing this when I bought my pair (had to go to the city to do audition all these pairs) so I bought something that was cheap and would be decent enough to make a mix on. listening to all the different pairs was awesome, and I definitely know which ones I want next. no guessing involved.

it'd be nice if GC had some competition. there isn't any around here.
So 3 frkn Guitar Centers all with the same sht.
and maybe a couple small ma&pa's...with basically nothing for monitors.

for a HR low on cash... i really want it to earn the $1000 mark. i loved the dyn5a's...but still procrastinating...or being frugal.

To clear my head, I think I'd love to hear the Yorks at $300range.
They're highly praised by others that have moved on to upgrades...and even most ex-yorkie owners don't post that they sucked afterwards, still good praise for $300-400 speakers.

kinda like the RNC, even when i dumped some bread on a more expensive piece, the RNC was still nice sounding to me. unlike some other gear where you upgrade and realize you'd been listening to pure sht.

so i'm thinking Yorks first....for a solid year at least.
then maybe see if the DYNS have me gearlusting.
damn, i been doing this sht since Feb!

i do have a tax id now so it'll be a write off either way... :D

YSM1P or DYN5A?
or keep my BW303/amp...which according to the RTA is pretty flat, and I've about a year on 'em?

yeah....auditioned 10 sets...i can realte Falken, damn thats alot of speakers.
