I would love to hear the difference myself between the same material mixed by the same person on two different monitors.

That could be interesting, but be aware that an equally big difference in a mix could be caused just by mixing on another occasion on the same set of monitors. Sure different monitors influenses the produced mixes, but a test like this really doesn't say that much. If you restart from scratch with a new remix, it will no doubt sound quite different on the same monitors.

Thanks BB! Downloading now. Incidentally, I can't recall if I ever heard you weigh in on the whole "Are Yorkville's worth a hoot in the 'inexpensive monitors'" debate. Finances and a new kid on the way dictate that my monitors are of the "affordable" variety, so something in the Yorkville street price-range is pretty much spot-on. The BAD part about it is that I can't seem to find anyone locally that carries the suckers. If you HAD to (i.e. forced at gunpoint to make an inexpensive monitor recommendation, would the Yorkies be something you would feel comfortable with? Or would you be happier with an older pair of Events (maybe the PS8). I am a TOTAL NEWBIE when it comes to mixing. I write DSP software by trade, mostly things in the audio algorithm vein (MP3, MPEG AAC, DD, etc...), so I am not a COMPLETE moron when it comes to audio... but always appreciate a seasoned vet's opinion on things of this nature.

Thanks again,
Jeff

PS - Dammit... I think I just remembered reading that your OWN Yorkies, don't you? Crap. I guess that is a pretty good endorsement of their quality. Or did I hallucinate that? Feel free to slap me if I am asking something you've answered 950 million other times. I've been digging through the archives on monitors and stuff all weekend... can't remember who said WHAT anymore. :o

I use Yorkvilles as secondary references...

They are good choice anyways, but even better for those on a budget........!

Wow, how stupid I am. It's actually this very THREAD that you talked about using the Yorkies and a sub as a secondary monitor set. What a moron I am. Ugh. Anywho, keeping this in mind, does that imply that the Yorkies by themselves are not up to the task of doing full range mixes in a budget home studio environment. I NEVER plan on doing pro level stuff... but would like to get as close as I can with a PC recording environment using the M-Audio Omni Studio and a combination of mic'd and direct recorded instruments.

Assuming that the Yorkies require the sub for you to do accurate mixes, do you have a better suggestion for monitors ONLY that would do a better than decent job in the under $500 category?

Thanks BB,
Jeff

Man, it appears that we are out of sync by like 30 seconds on our posts and responses! :D

So what's the rational behind the sub? Or did I misread that above?

Thanks for the continued response,
Jeff

I use the sub to double-check the low-end....

The Yorkies are worthwhile on their own anyways...!

hey guys, there's a lot of discussion about monitors, right?
well, i came to be able buying some of the mackie hr824s five years ago (when i had the money to do this, oh, long time ago...) and recorded and mixed any kind a style from deathmetal to ethno/world music-stuff with it and......
they're fucking great!
so, a friend of mine still does his mixing on his hifi-equipment (yes he does, and he mastered professional jazz-recordings and stuff) and he's also got very good and clear results!
how comes?
for all the low or non-budget-people out there i recommend the forthcoming monitor-brain-plug-ins, check www.holofeeling.com, which maybe useful, if you speak german.
neihaltn!

I have Studiophile 5Bs, but haven't taken them out of the box yet, so can't speak to their quality. they sounded okay at Guitar Center, though, and the price was good ($350 US? $400? In there somewhere).

I'm running an old pair of M-1s from a Samson 50w, was gonna yank the cheapo stereo speakers outta the living room and put the M-1s in there, and hook up the 5Bs in the studio...

...and my wife vetoed. M1s were too big for the living room. So, 6 months later, 5Bs are still in the box.

Saw a pair of NS-10s for $45 today at the shop when I was dropping my <namedrop> Prophet 5 </namedrop> for repairs. Bet they're worth THAT much.

Anyone using JBLs anymore?

Guess I'm old school. Well, at least I'm old! ;-) I have a set of JBL 6208 reference monitors that sond pretty good.
