Acoustics for Dummies - Maxwall?

Hey everyone!

I haven't been in this forum b4!

But I really need your advice. I record vocals in my bedroom, and it (the room) sounds like ass. I gather that this is because of "slap and flutter", whatever that is. I use a cardoid mic (C1), so I'm not trying to record the ambience, only my dry (not ass-tainted) voice, and I will apply my own reverb later.

I discovered Aurelex's Maxwall, and I think that may be the answer to my problem. Being a (rented) bedroom, I can't exactly cover the walls in foam. But will recording in fromt of a Maxwall really get rid of the "slap and flutter"?

If I stand about a foor (or so) away from the mic when I record, and I will be standing a foot or so in front of the Maxwall, then how big should the Maxwall be to sheild the mic?

Could I replicate a Maxwall simply by putting acoustic foam on a stand, or is there more to it?

Also, should I be worried about the ceiling?

Sorry - I'm a complete idiot when it comes to acoustics. Thanks for your replies!

helo!

know wat, i got the same problem with mic recording, i think mine's even worse. my place is rented too. but here's how i got to get around it, i gate my vocals manualy by volume envelope. notice that once the voice signal is on, there's not much of the ambient sound is heard which is good for a start. with the signals gated, i replicate studio reflections by duplicating the tracks and creating the reflections from that dublicate. i play around with the levels to get the right atmosphere. believe it or not, i use a dynamic mic coz in the place where i live, there's not much u can get here. iv'e created a template that somehow recreates a fig-8 mic. since it's just a demo, i figure, digital cheating ain't much of a fuzz. and if i do release it indipendently, who'd know anyway right?

if you have a good song that's recorded clean, that's all that really matters, the song. people would still like it, don't you think?

PD,

It depends on how completely you surround yourself. If all you want is to deaden the room a little, just hang some blankets on the walls. Or set up a few mike boom stands with the boom perfectly horizontal, and drape blankets over them to create a walled-in section.
