Looks like an good idea for small foam or rigid fiberglass panels face up in front of nearfields. Maybe even monitors on stands.. Note the thickness relative to the speaker above them. Aimed at 1/4 wavelength absorption probably???. Seems like a good idea for console or desk mounted near fields. You would have to move them back to make room for these though. I remember reading that one of the criteria for Licensing the use of the term "LEDE" in relation to a studios control room, was PROOF by means of ETC measurements, that there was no reflections from the face of the console within 20db of the direct sound from the monitors. It would seem these might help, although I'm not sure. I'm going to try it though. Note that they say the side reflections are "diffused" via wall mounted diffusers. Well, that may be for listening rooms, but for control rooms, we know better(absorbers)...don't we? :D Anyway, have a look. Although, I think its in Russian or some other language, there is an english section below.

Hello again. I see no one has commented on this. The reason I posted it, is because newer technologys are emerging for sound reproduction transducers and acoustical delivery. There is even a new technology using ultra sound for transmitting audio directly to the body, which I've read that "recievers"(human beings) can't tell where the sound is coming from, although they "hear" it. With the advent of Sound Surround 7.1 and others, it's only a matter of time before studios will be confronted with monitoring or mixing for new technology home systems such as this. As you can see, just as the prior idea focuses on the horizontal plane for eliminating vertical early reflections, so does this concept.

It appears what this means is translation to home audio reproduction systems of the future, will become more intolerant of control room inconsistancies, as the "users" room will have less enfluence on the final sound. At least I believe that is the ultimate goal of future systems...that is to say, EVERY system will sound like what you hear in the control room. Maybe it's premature at this point, but I know future audio delivery technology will also ultimatly enfluence how we monitor in the control room. Even now, international standards are in place for 5.1 SS monitoring and are being(may already) for 7.1 and beyond. Let me say right here, I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but in light of DVD etc, it seems that it won't be long before 360 degree Sound Surround audio delivery will iminate from one or two small devices, which even people who use computer audio, know that psyco-acoustical effects that are already employed. This probably will become an Acoustical standard in the future as reflectivity/absorption "standard" devices and locations will probably be employed for "sonic intity" placement in the surround field, instead of multiple surround transducers. Anyway, I saw this and thought it interesting and relative to the previous post. Who knows. Maybe newer technology studio monitors are just around the corner.

Hey, Rick.

I'm skeptical. But it might work. I've heard those Bang and Olufsens and wasn't all that wowed by them.

Actually, now that I think about it a little bit, I was impressed by B&Os. A CD I had didn't sound good, but the ones in the store sounded very good. Very expensivve, though, like $20k or something.

 Holy Bombats!!! NO speakers are worth that...although, what ever the market will bear exists in lots of products...untill there is no market of fools left. Here is a few interesting reads on the history of loudspeakers and such if anyone is interested. Studio monitors included :) You can kind of see where things came from, including instrument speaker design.
