Variation on Fauré's Pavane

Two steel string acoustic guitars - the right side is the harmony by Gabriel Fauré, the left is my improvised melody. Fauré's original melody is here if you haven't heard it, done on two nylon string gtrs.

I may have cut the low end a little too much. What do you think? (I just noticed an edit glitch at 1:50... will redo).

Tim

Pretty, pretty, pretty,
What's the slight rumble on the fade? Sounds like you getting up or something. Can you filter that out?
Most of your improv. worked REALLY well - one gliss had a little too much string squeak in it which blurred the sound of the notes but that's real guitar playing after all.
Congrats on a lovely piece of work.
Cheers

Very nice Tim. I like the tone of the guitars right now, myself. I don't find them lacking for low end. It would be interesting to hear them with more, for a comparison, but that would still be subjective to my own opinion, so....
Anyway, the playing is grand, as usual. And the overall sound is beautiful. A very peaceful tune. I really like it.

Excellent playing as always....I find the panning to be interesting - it's like the two are at panned 11 and 01. They are tight together yet they seem to fill both sides of the speakers and retain excellent individual clarity. Maybe it's the reverb of the room that is pushing the sounds out to the sides. Not sure if that makes sense but I like it. The mic positioning and settings sound really good on this - close but still with room sound - there's that room thing coming up again. Really enjoyed this!

Hi Tim: It sounds sweet to my ears. I love the airy sound you get, and the detail of your fingers on the strings. When I lived in Belguim, this sound would fit right in many a places we went to. Walter

rayc – Thanks for your comments. I’ll listen for the rumble at the end – hadn’t noticed that. Re fingering squeaks, I knew I should have soaked those left hand calluses in lanolin. :D

Dogman – appreciate the listen…. hey, I uploaded a new file right around the time you posted that had less split band compression and maybe a little nicer lower midrange. Not sure which one you got. Perhaps I’ll try a bit more low end also.

ido1957 – this time I used different guitars trying for separation of the parts while keeping them next to each other on the stage… so thanks for your comments. Both gtrs mic’d at 3 ft with a hypercardioid, then the bit of room sound it got was added to with really short, dark SIR and Anwida verbs.

Walter – Thanks. That’s what I love about the GR pre… that you can move the mic’s back, play softly if you want and just crank the pre up to 11 to get “airy” without noise! Makes life easy... but it doesn’t have the smoothing-over richness of the EH pre used closer or for louder playing. Oh well, just different tools.

I think I got the fixed version Tim, as there is no glitch, and the panning is very good. It sounds like 2 people in the same room. Not too much seperation.

listening as i type.. unfortunately on headphones. Wow thats pretty. Something about this melody caught me right away. Playing is unreal like usual. I like the seperation in the guitars. I think tone wise this is my favorite I've heard you do. Quality wise sounds great to me. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Take care
gary

your sound is great.
i'm not sure exactly what kind of a variation you were going for on this piece, but it's different. watch some of your rhythms as they seem kind of lax in places. The original song is very simple in melody and rhythm....so if you're trying to match that, slow it down a bit :) It just sounds like the direction of your solo is lost at points.
There a few notes here and there that don't sound as if they belong in the chord. A couple that stuck out at me where at about 0:22 and 1:34.

but overall, i like it :)

Nothing to add, but I really like your phrasing and the elasticity of your time. Nice work.

I always really enjoy hearing your music...your recording has beautiful tone, and the musicianship is superb! Thanks for sharing it with us here!!

Excellent playing, very enjoyable improv of the piece. I especially like the panning. Everything is seperated just enough so that both parts are real clear and sort of surround the listener. Good work, no real suggestions for this one. :)

Dogman, gbav, logicaldove – Thanks guys, I appreciate the listens and comments.

bennychico – thanks for your comments… yeah, the rhythmic stretching of the lead gtr over the metric accomp (done to a click) and the wandering style of the phrasing might not be everyone’s cup of tea but glad you liked the overall effect.

Supercreep, variaxman, Snakedog – thanks so much. :)

Tim, this piece brought emotion from deep within. I actually became misty eyed. It touched my heart.

You did a marvelous job on this! The playing is articulated with a masters' hand.

Excellent!!!

TRUE :)

Beatifull playing, you`ve got an exelent technique.
I like the sread as well.
The sound is very warm, and nicely mixed.

What pre`s are you using? :)

True - I appreciate it that you hear it emotionally.

Nakatira - the pre was a Great River. Thanks for your comments.

Another great recording Tim! I hope your students understand that their teacher is extremely talented.

Very nice playing Tim,
I love this style of playing and I just want to say that I found it very relaxing and enjoyable to listen to.

I don't think I need to add my 2 cents about the recording and tone!

Nice Work! :)

Thanks David and Gorty! :)

NEW MIX

Hey I've put up a new mix that I think is better balanced in the lower half of the spectrum - more realistic actually re how the guitars sounded in the room (same link as the original). Let me know if it's better or worse.
