Got a new tune i've been working on and would like your input please. The mix and arrangement are better than my previous attempts but that's not hard.

All instruments were recorded on a humble zoom h4, am really starting to hate the metallic sound it produces but all i got at mo. Ordered a SPB1 tho , my 1st mic.

All crticism welcome am not easily offended.

Thanks

Andy

It's the top one

you know, this is very good. Your voice is great. Really great. Less is more sometimes, and I think your Zoom does a fine job. Anyway, it's not what you record with, but weather or not the performance is there, and man, it's there. I'm surprised no one has commented yet.

Good luck with the B1. Nice song.

what he said ^^^

Great singing, great playing and a fine tune. Guitars sound good, and the whole thing hangs together well.

More should hear this

Thanks for the reply, was starting to worry cause i've had comments before both positive and negative and thought this mix and song was better.

I've been working on vocals quite a lot recently, I think i've improved so tis nice to hear some appreciation. Thanks again.

Sometimes it's difficult getting noticed.

I liked the instrumental in your track. WHat was the instrument?

I am repeatedly amazed at the quality of recordings done on Zooms.

I really love the realism of the image. The room you were in has a lot to do with it, I think. When the ocarina? came in, I ripped off the phones and grabbed my cellphone.
Everything is so well imaged, EQ'd, naturally panned.....a real pleasure to listen to.

And I really stopped listing to this kind of music back in 1970 when I got an earful of Jimi...this is a lot like something Jefferson Airplane would use as a root of a rocked-up version. But your performance kept me locked on...dittos on the voice...and the guitars were carefully played, tastefully.

:DMuch appreciated, fantastic comments thanks. I can't wait to gain more equipment and keep hammering the music and mixing.

The instrument is actually a penny whistle which i had laying about the house, it was luckily in Emaj so fit nicely.

I do love the Zoom h4 but am starting to out grow it, will be strange tracking straight to Reaper and seeing the waveforms materialise as i go.

Next mic purchase, a pair of Oktava Mk-012's :D can't wait.

Yep. What they said. Nice job. And just goes to show that you don't need $10,000 worth of equipment to make great recordings. Again great job. Keep em coming.:)

Great voice and performance, congrats!:)

Guitars sounds good; Miking closer to the body would be my suggestion
for a better definition of lows, obviously depending of room, instrument...
The Oktava pair will give you much more flexibility.

good stuff.. however it has a sort of "dont annoy the neighbours " sound to it.

ie ..you need to project your voice more ..especially in the quieter parts ..somehow the whole thing including instruments has a bedroom feel...which it probably is ..maybe you should just get angry and fuck the neighbours... it would sound a whole lot better on all fronts.

i really like it alot. i almost want to buy an h4. there's another poster around named danny byrne (i think his tag is danny88 or something) and while i don't think he uses an h4 anymore he did at one point and i thought those recordings were also great.

but kudos man.. sounds really good.

I like the mix, Andy. Your vocals are very good and the git playing is pretty clean although I could do without the slap against the spruce throughout the whole song. Maybe if you could just limit it to the chorus it would be more dynamic. The pennywhistle is a bit out of tune, (flat) but you would have to tune your guitar to that. The vibrato in the whistle is a little nervous, although it works for the vox. HTH

Wig:)

that was really nice i liked it:) i'm not sure what it was (it think tapping the guitar or cymbal?) but i thought that part was a little overpowering or distracting at times, but other than that i liked it alot:D

Wow lots of replies thanks. The tapping is the guitar and yeah it's a little loud and destracting might try and adjust it a little.

The reason it's a bit chilled with the vocals is the way i record it. The zoom does not take pops etc very well, low SPL. This forces me to record on the lowest setting, plus i couldn't hear myself as i had the tune on headphones from the DAW and just hoped for the best lol.

Can't wait to get more mics and take a step up in quality.

I don't really play the penny whistle and jus stuck it in last minute so guitar might have been out slightly, some notes i just played badly lol

Thnks again for all the comments musch appreciated

Very nice performance, guitar, flute and voice. Mix sounds very good to me, nice quality. I've got an SPB1 and I think for the price you can't get any better. But this sounds really good.

Joey :):):):)

try standing away from the mike if its popping.

I did try several different volumes distances etc and found that recording on the low settings, get's the best results with the least amount of problems.

Thanks Joeym, your mixes are pure quality so nice to know that you think am on the right track

Sounds great - nice voice/guitar and the recording is very good. Would never have thought a Zoom could do this but it sounds great.

Real nice, all around.

Really well done Andy. Great vocal control, pleasant guitar sound, and the flute/whistle in the background brings me back to the "Karate Kid" days. Nice mix. Just goes to show, that you don't need a lot of gear to put out a nice quality recording. Control of dynamics, microphone placement, and a good ear can go a LONG way.

Keep posting new tracks for us to hear!

Nick
