acoustic treatment question, plzz help!

Hi guys. I just moved in to a new apartment and need some help with acoustic treatment: as my bedroom is too small i have to work in my living room which is 16ftx11ft (5x3 meters). i attached a drawing of the room, plz take a look. i know it`s not ideal to have the monitor next to a corner and i know i should work on the longer wall of the room, but i`m married so... anyway, i want some basic acoustic treatment using some acoustic foam or whatever, i allready bought a 1x2 meter piece to get started. whats the minimum i should use and where? plz feel free to give any advice u think is relevant.

I lucked out and married a musician. :)
Just winging it here, the left speaker is bound to have some bass build-up. Can you fit about 4" min absorption around that corner? Maybe over head?

what do u reccomend? triangle shaped foam that will close the corner? at what hight?
 
I'd recommend a couple things, but I'm assuming right now that given your current situation you can't do them. First of all, If you could re-arrange the room in such a way that the sofa is actually across the from your workstation this would have a possibility of trapping some of that unwanted bass. Of course Its not as good as building your own bass traps, but I'm assuming right now you don't want to spend the money for some ethan winer real traps, or make your own from the design on the site. Of course, you have probably heard a ton of times that acoustic foam is expensive and only traps unwanted his and some mids. And you have probably already heard that you also want to get rid of bass. Also I'd suggest making your own acoustic panels out of some 703 rigid fiberglass and get something to cover it (some kind of thick fabric). You should find some kind of way to bass trap the corners too. Could you give us more detail on your abilities in this subject?

i can build bass traps, but where do u think i should put them exactly?
i don`t want to spend a lot of money, i have a 2x1 meter spiked foam slab, i`ll get another one, and maybe find the time to build some bass traps. where should i put the foam and the traps?

This is not the best place in the room, but if you can not move then make 4" panels as some else said up top... Start with straddling the right corner (floor to ceiling would be best, but I understand the wife.. Next I would put a few in front of you (space them 4" off the wall) and if you can straddle any floor to wall or ceiling to wall corner you can... It would be great to see you get out of that corner, but like you said "THE WIFE"!

first of all, my wife is starting to feel bad, so let`s leave her out of this :) . i can move out of the corner but i preffer not to, as my monitors are on shelves and i don`t have a drill, and they are allready in place and all. i`m a little confused:
1) what are basstraps and what are 4" panels? what`s the difference?
2) where should i put each of the above?
3) where should i use foam?

i`m new to acoustic treatment so plz plz bear with me.

p.s
i don`t need a really "dry" room, just a good solid sweetspot so i can produce decent mixes. is all the paneling and basstraping neccasery? can`t i get away with just foam?
 
Foam just reduces relections of hi and mid frequencies. The worst to work with are low frequencies. If you just effect hi and mid, whenever you edit, you'll add/leave too much bass, and it will sound dead boomy in other rooms. What you are looknig for is as flat a response as you can so it sounds good in every room. Bass traps in corners of the rooms. 4" panels of what? Probably rigid fiberglass.
 
Just a thought... Problem is the shelving and coffee table was too big for the space between the tv and sofa... Tough job man... Good luck! :)

OK, Peritus, i don`t understand what u mean, can u try again plz?

so is foam useless? what should i do with the foam? where should i use what? can u guys be more specific? like "basstrap here and there, one panel between x and y..." what would u suggest?

and one last time.. what is a basstrap?? those triangled foam that goes in corners? or just like the panels but for corners?

The panels in the second link are plywood faced so they're good at the low end but reflect highs. But the fiberglass ones are as effective, broad band and very easy to build. Basically they're semi-ridged fiberglass, framed or not, wrapped in cloth. A constant whether fiberglass or foam, is the depth. Either is fine but 1 or 2" thick is only good down into the mids.
Depending on how hard you want to hit this, you might try the foam between the speakers, gather a bunch of 2" slabs of 703 (very inexpensive), straddle the left corner and/or at the wall ceiling like Myfipie said, maybe a 2 incher on the left side-wall to catch that hard reflection, compare and listen and go from there. The other nice thing is to have some spare moveable two or three inch panels around that you can use to help in micing chores.
