Acoustic Mix Request For Comments

I just finished up a couple tracks for a friend of mine and wanted to get some comments on the sound and mix.

We were going for a rather dry 'girl and her guitar' feel. I used a pair of stereo matched Octava MC012's with cardiod capsules about 4-6in away. One pointing down the kneck towards the 12th fret and the other about 3in behind the bridge. I placed an SM57 about 12in away pointed on an angle from the 12th fret in towards the back corner of the sound hole and finally an MD421 on the floor on an upward angle about 1ft away. She plays rather quiet.

The vox were done with an Rhode NT1.

I'd appreciate any comments on the overall tone and mix. There are still some artifacts in there I havn't attended to yet so if you here a couple thumps here and there I'm working on it. =)

woah..... very good sounding acoustic guitar... definately professional quality. The vocals are well done also. They need something subtle though, i can't put my finger on it. I definately dig the dry sound.

The guitar sound is great for the soloist sound. The performances are fine. The vocal tone is thin, it does not match the fullness of the guitar, it sounds like it is not as intimate and warm as the guitar like she is singing from about 4 feet behind.

I would add a little low mid to the voice to bring het up closer and give it a little more "chesty" kind of sound. It may just be the mic. I have had some mics sound wonderful on a male voice only to sound awful on a female (overly bright / sibilant).

You might actually have to rerecord the vocal with her really close,...just suggestions.

I felt the same way working with the track . I had wanted to put her right up on the mic unfortunatly my lack of experience and a working compressor made it difficult for me to get the levels right to prevent peaking on the some of the stronger notes so I had to have her move back to get a usable track.

I'll throw some equalization on it and see what I can do.

I wouldn't worry too much man, i'm sure after 8 years he's sorted his mix out :)
