if i record an acoustic guitar track...which hovers around the 80-1,000 Hz....i could essentially cut everything below 70 Hz to make room for the low end instruments, right?

Yup. And nothing below that point would be recorded, which would do two things:

1) save you file space

2) avoid/get rid of frequencies you're not gonna ever need ever.

In fact, since the low E on a standard tuned guitar is 82 Hz, you don't need to go down as low as 70 Hz. :)

I don't see how you could go wrong with this approach, but consider! what Blue Bear had to say about this in another thread. He said it for a very good reason. Tracks don't exist in isolation, they exist in relation to other tracks. The sound of a track is worth only what it sounds like when it's played with other tracks. Your guitar might sound good on its own with this or that EQ adjustment, but what does it sound like mixed in with other tracks? It's one of the main questions come mixing time.

Having said that, I'd be willing to bet that Blue Bear doesn't often save the acoustic guitar frequencies below 80 Hz...
