So this thread has PRBLY ALREADY been done SOOOO many times, but I just got a new SDC in and I am playing around with acoustic guitar tracks. I was wondering if anyone had any good recording suggestions (EQ, MIC PLACEMENT, COMPRESSION................) I already put a bit of compression (sometimes) and some boosting hi-mid eq (small amounts) on, but I just want everyone elses take. We (my band) are about to start doing some new tracks and I want the best sound possible! Thanks guys!!!:D

You're right, this has been hashed out a bit buy my recommendation would be to stay away from all the effects (EQ, compression etc.) until you become "one" with your mic, gear, guitar and recording space. Patience and practice...those are the words of widsom I would hope to impart.

I'd start by placing the mic about 6" inches away from the fretboard and placed directly infront of the 12 fret...basically at the body/neck joint.

Experiment with placement...further back, closer in then up and down the neck and some spots closer to the body.

Track them, take notes and then go back and listen. Go for the best sounding recording in naked form (no, don't take your clothes off ) then fiddle with EQ. My personal approach is solid clean take, apply a bit of parametric EQ to take out sizzle and/or boom, maybe a slight bump in the middle then a dab of compression if necessary. There is a bit of science but IMHO, a great deal of art. Take that approach and you'll find what works for you.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. I have been playing around putting it about 5-7 inches away then about a foot and a half. I will try a little more with the placement and get more familiar with it. It's a new mic (NAIANT X-Q). Thanks guys and I will try with some SMALL EQ afterwards.

Thanks again!

How about trying to cut rather than boost with the EQ...

Get a freq all the way UP, put the Q of it to a narrow one and move it around as you playback the recorded GTR. Find the frequencies that bother you or that you find "unpretty" and then cut those out a bit...

Mine sounds best about 8" or so away from the neckjoint, where the neck meets the body.

With a stereo setup, I put one about 6" away from the 7th-9th fret and another about 1ft. from the saddle pointed at the soundhole.

This is slightly off topic but still relates. Once you find the "sweet spot" for recording acoustic guitar, remember you have to keep the guitar in the same relative position. Playing without moving the guitar is harder than you might think.
