Hey man...how goes?

I listened to "Tomorrow"....
first the tech stuff...
Drums sounded good....real good.....needs cymbals though....
bass and synth sound like a cheesy casio.....what did you use for a synth?
Guitar sounds thin....and it is out of tune man....really bad out of tune...
real bad timing error at 1:19.....bad edit maybe?

musically this seemed to drag to me.....perhaps if you added a vocal it would be more appealing....and the musical change at 1:19 really doesn't work....not to me anyways.

Good effort man.
Keep em' coming....

I think it's pretty darn good. Your guitar sounds fine, great stereo image. Guitar doesn't sound out of tune either. I think I would lower the mix of the synth in the back ground... I also like that short phrase at 1:57-2:00. I don't know how you got the drums to sound so real (I believe you said you use midi according to an older thread you had started)

I think the change at 1:19 (the ascending on the chromatic scale) sounded a little iffy, but I think how it lead into the next part that took over. Maybe make the transition really fast or slower (depends on what you want)

If you add vox or more components it'll get even better, but so far I like it. Oh and you maybe you want to go for a slower fade out? I don't know what your going for so I'm just making suggestions.

keep it up, sounds good.

Hey the synths were tts from Sonar 6...the default synth player. I wasn't aware they were so Casio sounding. I've been using pc speakers to listen and mix on...maybe that has something to do with what I think it sounds like...or maybe I have a love for Casio synth sounds that I didn't know about. Anyway, thanks...I wanted to see what the deal was with this...maybe I can redo it.

Hey tojo...thanks...yeah anyway, it is kind of a slow, slow song...I thought to myself, man this is so slow it can't even get out of the way of itself!

Will the melody line played by the synth track be the vocal line at some point ? If so it has a nice vibe to it. Not sure what kind of range it's in but generally a cool melody to start with. Drums sound good, guitar doesn't sound out of tune, synth sounds well, synthy. I neither hate or or love it because I'm approaching this from a melody/vocal writing perspective, so for me it's just a placeholder. Good start so far...:)

The lead synth playing the melody is there in place of a vocal...generally...some of it at the change after the raising chord progression will stay, maybe with a different tone. But the start and end of the song should have a vocal doing that melody. Thanks for the feedback.

Sounds good. The drums could really use some fills and variation. Hard to get a feel on the song without the cox, but everything is in place and ready to go.

Hey man I wont be putting any cox on this one...but yeah...anyway...this is the last thing I recorded with my Firebox, it's onto using the ART MPA Gold now...did some tests with that...night and day compared to the Firebox.

Thanks for the comments

so are you gonna stop using the firebox completely? or send the pre into the line in on the back?

I'm just gonna use the line in at the back so the Firebox won't be out of the picture entirely. Nice little unit it is :)

hm... I'm thinking about getting a firebox someday maybe... The pres can't be that bad? And thne I could get two individual pres for more microphone recording on the back. Or just save up for a motu unit...

You wouldn't buy the Firebox for its pre's if you can get something better. It was good for me as a starting interface and I think it would be handy for on the road recording, say with a laptop. Anyway, it's a pretty nice little box...very sturdy.

well is there any audio interface that has pres that people actually like? People always seem to be complaining about built in pres? Are they actually worse than like a $100 preamp ? I've never had an external preamp (i have a mixer with 4 mics that have gain knobs so I guess thats a pre)

so knowing what you do know, what interface would you rather buy?

I dunno really...but take it from me that the dedicated pre...the ART MPA Gold kills the Firebox in terms of pres...and even though other people bag the Gold for this and that, for me...the hobby guy, it's insanely good. And I used to think the pres on the Firebox were great...so...you can just keep going up the scale I suppose...

Anyway...sorry I can't really recommend any interface with outstanding pres...just look into a dedicated preamp I would say, and use either a dedicated AD converter interface or something like the Firebox.

oh i just looked at the art tube preamp and its $289 at zzounds.com so I'm assuming that a preamp that almost costs as much as a firebox would def. have better pres. so when you say dedicated you mean get one good pre and a good da conversion (like audio interface) ?

For me i'm probably way below the firebox haha. I'm running a behringer mixer. So the mic pre's probably aren't that good compared to a firebox let alone a art gold pre!

The change at 1:18 is weird. Punch in? The drums sound lopsided like the overheads are out of phase.

I agree with the others that the keys sound cheap, but it kind of works with the feel of this song. Guitars sound good.

oh i see. Why are you mentioning that little behringer pre? Are you saying that its pretty good? Because if it is, my friend up the street can sell me one for like $15. Is it worth it?

Hi, Monkey

Lows are kinda weak;I suggest two "band" boosts-One ~ 65hz for the Bass Drum. And the other around 100hz for the bass guitar
(obviously, the better is to fix it in the tracks /mix)

Guitars sounds a bit "over" in the 4khz range, probably micing, a (wide) cut in this frequency range can help.
