Buy a used UAD card and get the Fairchild plug-in. Easily done for under $500.
Alternatively, you could get the freeware Density Mk. II compressor from Bootsy. Its free and is similar in style to the Fairchild (don't compare it as a replacement, because its not...its just different, but still very damn good). I use that on drum overheads, acoustic guitar, piano.

Get the Waves CLA compressors or API waves bundle and call it a day. I like the UAD stuff but honestly plugs and computers are getting so good these days there is almost no use for a UAD card accept to unlock the plug. Might as well buy a bundle that sounds just as good and get bang for your buck. Both bundles mentioned have everything you would need and more for $600 and under depending where you buy from.
