Anyone used one of these? Our bass player is interested but hasn't been able to get much help from the music shop. My suspicion is that solid bodies are more popular for good reason. Any enlightenment?

THey are very cool, especially in an "unplugged" setting. Check out Alice in Chains "Rotten Apple" as well as the entire Unplugged album. You can't play metal with one, but you can create a great acoustic low end.

They are cool for some things....

I have a Washburn AB-10.

I would NOT recomend using an acoustic bass guitar as your main bass. They are very prone to feed back if you use an amp above a "practice" volume with a live band etc.

Most of them use piezo's P/U's with wich you can use nylon tape wound, bronze acoustic strings or typical ecectric style strings wich gives you many tonal options for recording.

The Violent Femmes have several Albums/CD's with some incredible acoustic bass playing.

in my experience, acoustic guitars feedback horribly in the bass registers, so it stands to reason that an acoustic bass would do no matter.

that said, acoustic basses can vary widely in regards to their performance, in my experience. most sound decent, but don't fill out the low registers properly in an acoustic jam. my dad used to have an epiphone el capitan, and that thing was the loudest unplugged bass i have had the joy of playing. i would definately check one out if shopping for one.

that said, i've only played a small handful of acoustic basses, and none were by hardcore boutique brands (lowden, larrivee, collings, yadda yadda), just big makers. my experience simply says that i would not have been hesitant to play THAT particular el capitan in an acoustic band at any time. every other one may suck, but that one had some nice boom to it-it was also a large unwieldy instrument.

a properly designed acoustic bass is a cool instrument. an improperly designed one is an electric bass that's not plugged up, which is to say-useless.

I've never heard one that had any acoustic volume to it, except one.

A few years ago I played a modified guitarron (Mexican bass) and was amazed. The guy had put a shortened Fender fretless neck on it and had it tuned a fourth higher (A,D,G,C). In a jam session setting, which included banjo, fiddle, guitars and mandolin, it had no trouble cutting through. It was easy to play and was as loud as a stand up bass. Someone should make these.
