Hot damn! This is per the Sonic Foundry website. Looks like the new features will include:

Plug-in effects automation (thank dog)

ASIO driver support

5.1 surround mixing (something else to learn, geez)

MIDI piano roll edit (finally!)

Yamaha OPT support

VSTi support (cool)

Alternate time signatures (way cool)

Master, aux & effects bus tracks (WOW!)

MIDI event list editing & step recording (it's about time)

Loop Cloning, and (in Sonic Foundry's words, of course) much more.

I think this is awesome. I guess SF felt they were probably losing customers to Sonar, so they had to bump up the features. I'm glad. I like working with ACID. I think it does a lot more than people give it credit for.

Anyway, y'all might want to jump on the beta testing if/when it becomes available. They sometimes offer great deals for those who help out.

What will be even more awesome is if they stick these features (and others) in Vegas.

I can't wait for this to come out. I've been using Acid 2 for awhile, and I'm so happy that they've decided to add more odd time sig support to it.

re- Acid 4.0

The best thing the Sonic Foundry guys could do would be to have some sort of effects automation track like cubase for example so that you could solo a track and record the automation for that track in real time instead of messing about with all those pesky envelopes...this is esp important if they are gonna use VSTi support ! Imagine trying to draw all the envelopes for a soft synth and its effects ! !....it dont bear thinking about. A few virtual faders linked to the effects envelopes that can be recorded in real time OR edited later in the usual manner would be fantastic and give any sequencer a run for its money. In fact if they could use the keyboard keys as up/down buttons along with mouse support i.e.- q=fx1-up a=fx1-down that way you could realy have some fun............. PS- anyone from Sonic Foundry reading this and thinking 'wow what a great idea!' can send my free copy to.............Yeah, as if !

its about time they did something with midi piano roll.....that 5.1 surround sounds like a cool feature to play with

Just received the email from sonic foundry
I have Acid music 3.0 and they are offering to upgrade me to Pro 4.0 for $99.00

I just don't see how I can pass this up!!!
:):):)

Since it supports VSTi instruments, does that include Halion? Could I record Halion stuff, like pianos and synths, directly into Acid?

That'd be ultra cool.

I've already been experimenting this week with recording directly into Acid Music 2.0, and with the ASIO drivers, it should be even better.

>ASIO driver support

I got it yesterday and so far the ASIO is a no go.

Crashes every time they are in use. Presently waiting for an explanation from SF...

that sucks. that's one of the reasons I was looking forward to upgrading from Music 2.0 to Pro 4.

that and the odd time sig capabilities.

Those bastards. That is what they get for not having users beta test prior to release. Maybe they will learn their lesson.

I guess they figured enough people would pay to "test" it, eh?

I'm still upgrading (from Pro 3), just haven't gotten mine yet.

It was ASIO support that got me on the train. It seems outrageous that Vegas Video doesn't even claim to support that.
Yeah, I'm pleased with the alternate Time Signature support and the Step Recording for MIDI, which I haven't gotten to work yet since I was distracted by this audio issue....

I guess they figured Acid users wouldn't really notice since recording is a smaller part of the functionality than in Vegas.

Sorry- I don't consider recording a "small" part of it.

And then they say it supports "unlimited" audio and MIDI tracks, but while the app can see all 10 of the inputs on my Delta 1010, it only supports recording two of them at a time in the style of Sound Forge. Cheese.

The most recent version of Vegas Video is kinda old - though I'm not excusing the absence of ASIO support. I'm assuming the next release of Vegas will include all these new features that have come to Acid.

>I'm assuming the next release of Vegas will include all these new features that have come to Acid.

Well- I for one hope they don't include the crash feature. :D

Well I just got off of the phone with Sonic Foundry Customer Service in search of an explanation as to why M-Audio's ASIO drivers work flawlessly in Logic Audio but crash ACID 4, and won't work in Vegas Video at 24 bit resolution. He seemed to be confident that M-Audio would get its act together in an upcoming driver revision.

He disdainfully commented that the SW authors at M-Audio didn't implement the full ASIO specification, so when SF makes a call to the driver, the driver doesn't know what the calling program is talking about.

He wouldn't go into just what part of the "specification" was left unfulfilled but it seems to me that if this was even remotely the case, that the Logic guys pulled off a miraculous workaround to an M-Audio problem, because IT WORKS.

Seems to me more important getting such a basic function like "recording" really working than honoring some esoteric aspect of the full Steinberg ASIO specification.

I've been checking out the SF Acid forum, and there seems to be a shit-load of problems with Delta cards. M Audio has released new Beta drivers for Acid 4.0.

Click Here, and be sure to check the "previous and Beta versions" box, then select your appropriate card and OS. Apparently it works.

I have an Echo Mia, downloaded the 4.0 Demo, and absolutely no issues with the ASIO drivers. In fact, 4.0 IMHO is the greatest thing since sliced bread. totally impressed, and I'm ordering right away.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot. Aside from this audio glitch I really like the features in this program.

That Beatmapper is a BLAST. Once the measures are lined up adding MIDI lines becomes a SNAP because the beats are shown on their own timeline. More fun than a barrel of, well- you know...

YES indeedy! That did it. It also fixed the problem in Vegas Video 3
and didn't mangle the already working status of Logic Audio.

Thanks for the tip!

I've been playing around with that Pro 3 I picked up, and that beatmapper is quite cool. I think the Cakewalk I have has something like that, but I've never bothered with it because it isn't so much 'in your face' like it is in Pro 3. That SF 6 is pretty cool. It's nice to be able to manipulate mp3's. You were right...it's a way of life.
