I'm working on a mix right now that has two sections of the song where all the music drops out and there's nothing but the lead vocal. The problem is this, in the spots where there's nothing but the vox, the vocals sound too thin. When I boost the 150-250 range, it sounds good alone but too thick or boomy when the music kicks back in. And visa versa. Any tips?

Why can't you back off the boost when the other instruments come in?

Yeah, I guess that's a viable option or just put it on another track and eq it to differently. I guess my real question is should vocals alone be EQed different from those in the mix?

it looks like you pretty much answered your own question....do whatever sounds good, in this case, processing the different sections differently....

cutting that part out and putting it on a separate track would be the easiest way to me.....

Sound like a job for automation if it's available to you.
