I'm amazed at the ignorance of the poor YouTube community. This video has a sad 4.5 stars, and a bunch of drooling fans of this guys work.

Seriously? Words escape me in describing the incompetence of this video. Good find Ghost.

It's kind of like taking a hammer and banging your tires in random spots until your tires quit shaking, instead of actually balancing the tires correctly.

Yeah, I was amazed at the level of incompetence of this dude who claims to be the head engineer of KGB studios!

The worst part is, there's several other videos in that series that he put out and each one is more horrifying then the next!

He did a great one how to demagnetize the deck and neglected to tell the audience to turn the machine off before you do it!

Then he's got another one where talks about oiling the heads!

I can only imagine how many people's machines have been completely destroyed by following his advice?

Anyway, I posted this for some comedic relief primarily and as a lesson to not believe everything you see on TV or on Youtube.

I'm debating whether I should post some comments on these videos in YouTube, or wait until he causes needless damage to thousands of decks across the world to increase the availability of damaged but not too-far-gone parts machines and lower their average prices.....

I'm gonna be honest.. This was the first result when I searched "reel to reel repair" or something of the like on google back in September of last year. It was when I was trying to fix my Sony TC-377.

I ate that stuff up and even took notes on it. (how did I know ANY better? It was a whole new world to me then. ) I tracked down his e-mail and tried to get him to send me a copy of the manual for the messed up Dokorder 7140 I got back in November.. didn't go well to say the least.

He's right about some things he says, but that deck also makes some creaky noises and... hahaha. I'm happy to say that I found this place. I leave everyday with less questions and more answers.

The problem with posting comments on there is that the majority of that crowd that's posting on there don't seem very interesting in getting a better education about the gear. They wouldn't believe you and you'd be wasting your time because it would quickly transform into a flaming contest between them and you. I think the better plan is for us to just keep doing what we do here, helping each other out when we can and not trying to over extend ourselves when we can't.

He does appear to be somewhat more coherent in that series, though it didn't play through all of the 15 episodes? It auto-played about the first 5 and then redirected the page to something else?

That said, the guy seems to be tripping all over his terminology of the various parts and doesn't seem to speak with the authority that one might expect from the head engineer of a commercial recording studio. He acts more like a typical weekend warrior who has been at the hobby for a long time and thinks he knows more then the cold light of day actually reveals.

Anyway, my original point, I hope, still stands that this sort of educational material is damned funny at best and down-right dangerous if it is used as one's only source of information.

I sure am glad I found this site and all you guys. Even the newbies here are smarter than that guy I have got so much help and yes, criticisim when needed. But I have never been misled with some kind of false mechanical issue settings like this guy is putting out. Thanks to Ghost and everyone else who has helped me.

So long as your heads are made out of diamonds, I can't foresee a problem with that!

Lighter fluid works much better...just dab it on with a Q-Tip.
If the gunk doesn't come off at that point...swab it onto the heads/guides heavily...and then light the fluid with a match and let it burn the gunk off.
Then just wipe the carbon residue off.

The important thing is to let it burn for at least a minute or two (just keep squirting more lighter fluid on the heads/guides to keep it burning).
You want a lot of flame & heat to work on that gunk!
When you think it’s done its work...if the flames are still burning, douse them out with a glass of water.

He has one thing right though... the nail polish. I do it a bit differently. I like to paint a woman’s cute little toes with red nail polish while I’m calibrating my reel-to-reel. Don’t ask me why, but it helps me somehow. I think it is sort of a stress reliever, especially if she giggles. It lightens the mood in what is otherwise a deadly serious activity.

I start with pinky toe and move up.

So, if I were to do a youtube video I would paint the pinky toenail of the girl’s right foot, and then adjust azimuth. Paint the next toe and then adjust Venus… oh wait, I mean zenith, and so on and so forth.

I may or may not look at the meters or scope… depends on whether she’s wearing a towel or is au naturel. If the later there’s no way I’m going to be looking at any freakin’ meters, so I mostly go by the sound... if I can hear anything above my heart pounding.

Haven’t done this for some time, but it’s on my to-do list. I’m saving myself for the right assistant.
