I got the parts in the mail today: AthlonXP 1500+ (1.33 GHz), Thermaltake Volcano 6, Abit KG7 (AMD760 chipset), 512 MB of PC2100 RAM, and some nice thermal compound to bond those components. I'm putting it in my old case and using my old power supply, drives, and cards. The old setup was a 700 MHz Slot A Athlon in an Anigma S30 board (AMD750 chipset) and 384 MB of RAM (PC100). The new setup should be pretty tight. I would've started working on it already, but I had to go to work right after the FedEx man brought the stuff. I've researched things fairly well, but I thought I oughta ask for any last advice to keep in mind before I start.

Well, I put it all back together. With the case I have, the power supply is right next to the CPU fan, so that's no good. I may swap cases with my parents when I go put my old board in their PC. Otherwise, it runs like butta so far. I haven't tried any recording, though. I did have one spontaneous reboot when upgrading my Delta 66 drivers. Hopefully that won't happen again. In case it does, does anybody know what to look for to cure a spontaneous reboot problem?

Windows XP will automatically reboot when you are trying to shut down if there is an error as it is shutting down. Often, this is the result of a driver error. If it just happened that once while you were updating drivers, it could just be a one-time deal and nothing to worry about. There is some way to stop the auto-reboot-on-error thing in Windows, but I forget how.

Sounds like a nice rig! Must have been fun putting it together.

Cool. I uninstalled the Delta drivers and then re-installed them, and everything went fine the second time. It was fun to put together the setup; I've always wanted to try building a PC.

I'm doing the same thing, going from an Abit be6-2 and 533 celeron to a Giga-byte GA7-DX and 1ghz Duron. We're you able to just boot your o/s once you put it back together,or do you have to do a fresh install?I hope that question makes sense!

I just finished building my system-

AMD Athlon XP1800

epox 8k3a (Via kt 333)
400 watt case

i plugged it all in with my old hard drives and windows worked as if nothing happend. it just had to reconfigured some of the new hardware but it was still the same

I reformatted the drive and reinstalled everything. Part of the reason for me doing this upgrade was to get WinXP to work--it wouldn't work with my old configuration. So I'm starting from a clean slate and it's smoooth, baby.

I don't know why I didn't post this last night (perhaps I was drunk), but there is one caveat here--if you have specific IDE bus mastering drivers for your motherboard installed (rather than the ones that come with Windows), you'll have problems booting up. The Windows bus mastering drivers are universal, but ones for specific chipsets are only for those chipsets. And a Celeron and a Duron chipset are about as different as you can get. If you don't remember installing special ones you probably didn't and you'll be OK.

Actaully,I believe I recall installing Highpoint something or other drivers from my Abit CDROM.The ultra DMA or whatever. So what's the worst case scenario?Reformat and reinstall Windows?I had planned to do that anyway, but I wanted to back up a couple files first. Most of my important stuff(wav.and project files) is on my E drive and shouldn't be affected, but you never know. Most of that is already backed up anyway.Thanx for the heads up!

You'll be A-OK if you do this. I have the same deal--a second hard drive that I mainly use for audio, that I used to store a few extra files that I didn't have backed up elsewhere. I like to disconnect the 2nd HD while I'm formatting and installing, just for extra safety.

Actually,its a single drive w/3 partitions.I'm not terribly concerned!
Thanx!
