i'm about to start construction... i wish i could come up with the dough to get someone else to do this for me.

anyway take a look at my design and a picture of the room in the basement i want to use... its 22' x 19'8"

where it says RL in the design for recessed lighting, i've decided to either forgo it or use track lighting since the holes for recessed lighting will let outside noise in from upstairs.

That looks like a nice layout. There are 2 comments I have but I would also defer final recommendation to someone like Knightfly on these.

The first is that I seem to think I've read that you want the control room ceiling to slant up from the mix position to the back (ie. the lower part is at the mix position and the higher part is at the back wall). I cold have this backwards, but check on it before building it.

The second is that you will probably want to move your mix position back from the front wall a bit to give some room between you monitors and the front wall (unless you are going to soffit mount them).

Otherwise, I'm jealous. I'd love to have that space.

Cheers,
Darryl.....

Couple of comments also. First, I agree with Darryl. Practical layout, AND you have walls in the iso spaces that break up reflections. As to actual construction, what are you using to structurally span the space in the control room at the ceiling? Since you are floating the floors, how are you going to treat the thresholds at the floor/doors since you will have a 3" void at the floor between doors? Since you have no structural floor members, that tells me you are fastening the walls to the existing floor, that means you are floating the floors BETWEEN the walls. Since you have no structural floor, how are you joining the subfloor panels to each other? Why are you using 1"thick hardwood flooring? That would imply custom milling as I've never seen hardwood flooring 1" thick, except maybe in homes such as the Rothchilds :D Have you determined your door/jamb/seal design? How bout your HVAC? I would love to see your design details at the duct/register connections, as well as your isolation plans for the HVAC unit. Where is the HVAC in the plan?
fitZ :)

The CR ceiling should slope up and away from the mix position.
Your diagram appears to have it the other way around.

Also, there's no way into the recording rooms without having to go thru the Control Room. That can be a real pain; especially when loading in heavy gear and amps.

You have the speakers firing in the shortest dimension of the room. That's... less than ideal.

I dunno.
Maybe something more like this?:

Good idea there, Michael. I hadn't considered traffic flow when I looked this morning.

I've been so busy with work lately that I haven't had much time to browse around here, so I'm getting a bit rusty.

Darryl.....

Sean,

What are you working with as far as your monitors go? Are they small nearfields or something a bit larger? From everything I hear, soffits are the way to go with medium to large size monitors (ie. medium would be something the size of Event 20/20's or the Mackie's with an 8" woofer) whereas small would be something with a 6" or smaller woofer. If you're going to put forth the effort to build a decent room, you need to be sure you have some halfway decent monitors to make the space work for you.

Anyway, just some random thoughts. And I still want your space (although Michael's is where my real lust factor is residing right now!!).

Cheers,

Darryl.....

Darryl, traffic flow has to be high on the list when considering any space.
The resultant from special consideration to traffic flow is ingress and egress (the way in and out of a building or room).
Those are important considerations when dealing with fire safety.
Ideally, you'd want at least 2 ways in or out of a space.
BUT, you need to check with your local building code!!!! (happy Rod?) ;)
This appears to be a basement, and as such, probably only has one point of ingress/egress.
But John schooled me in the pains of unwanted traffic through the CR. ;)

I think if anyone is going to go to the trouble and expense of building a recording space, they should really consider soffit mounted mains.
From what I understand, they're da bomb! :p And not too difficult to construct.
