Smart Monitor = Monitors the microphone input while recording a track. During playback, monitors only the clip on the track but mutes the microphone input.
Always Monitor = Monitors the microphone input during recording and playback. Does not play existing clips on the track during recording.
I have found drawbacks to both modes and I end up switching back and forth for different reasons.
1. While setting up volume levels for a new singer, Smart Mode will not monitor the microphone unless the track is actually recording. (But, I don't want to record just to set levels. I only want to play the adjacent tracks. It forces me to create a wasted file on my hard drive.) So, I switch to Always Mode.
2. While recording a punch-in over an existing track, Always Monitor Mode will not play the existing clip prior to the punch-in zone. So, I switch back to Smart Mode.
whew, I wonder if this has been addressed in AA version 3.0
