abortion of a song

Very good singing for sure, the voice is up front and it hardly needs anything I like the song alot. Nice instrumentation with the banjo and horns? The recording is ummm... I don't get it-is this you with a mic recording a playback from the deck? Is this a multitrack recording or a live recording? There's noises and a lack of directness, like it's a source removed from original. Sounds like an interesting recording of a very good song just a little confusing on the ears.
 
It's a multitrack recording that was put on to reel to reel. I don't think the multitrack tape exists.

I am thinking it could be put out like this, but maybe with something over the top - kind of like listening to someone listening to an artifact and playing along with it. Not sure...
