Hey gang...
A few weeks back, I posted a retracked version of my song Abby, on which the melody was played on keyboards. I receved a thoughtful and well-deserved thrashing by someone here about my lack of clarity of mind; with the great guitar solos, the listener would lose interest in the keyboarded melody. So, I hired a flute player to retrack it. And he was right, it's SO much the better for it. Thoughts?

Features Pete Huttlinger on the guitar solos, and Stacey Knights on flute. I'm everything else.

NEW MIX ADDED, SEE POST #8 FOR DETAILS!

Shit, sounds fine. Very smooth and mellow mix. I wouldn't know where to begin commenting a song like this, but nothing sounds bad or out of place, so I'd say stick a fork in it - it's done! :)

I guess if I just had to nit something, I'd like to hear a little brighter snare tone. But that's just personal preference. This is fine as-is.

Well, I have more nits than you do, mostly regardgin the drums and sax balance, and the sax player weighed in and said almost exactly what I was thinking... So, call this a preliminary or intermediate mix... :)

Sounds nice. Reminds me of Dr Hook in some ways

The first couple of melody lines sound like those songs:

The Bee Gees....I Started a Joke

and then...

The 'won't defeat me' part of Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

Oh, yeah this sounds complete. Very nice performance from you all. Lovely guitar sound. Great job!

Great, thanks for the earworms!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Joey,

Thanks much! I think you'll like it even better when I get closer to a finished mix...

Very well done,Phil.

Reminds me some Larry Carlton ballads from Kid Gloves and Discovery albuns.

Mix is pretty good too.
Difficult to say something to improve, but "IMO and my personal taste":
tons (ex: 0:14s , 1:46 ) sounds thin and snare not as "punchy" (or "in your face") as it could be.
Acoustic guitar solo could be tamed a little probably around 200 hz.

Good job, nice song and performance :)

Thanks man! I pulled the electric solo back like you suggested, and it does seem to nestle better.. I COMPLETELY remixed the drums. I replaced every kick manually (I had the foresight a few months to take discrete samples of my own kit to use as patches), because when I recorded this track, I think I had the mic too close to the head, so it was all wuffly and lacking in definition. I think the drums define a much better space now, and those floor tom hits are more robust too. I'm not calling this a "final" yet, but it's a lot closer. I think my master EQ might be a tad bottom heavy on this run...

Wow. Super.

The only thing I'd do different is pan the electric solo center for the duration of its feature.

This sucker works! Real pro sound...great playing...all the sounds, parts and textures weaving an interesting tapestry...in color.

Applause.

Well, I have you to thank. Thanks for kicking my butt. It was worth every penny. :D

Curious...did you change any of the voices in the chords under the melody during the altered V7 ??
No ear discomfort whatever in the passage any more. Like buttah. I never took it to the depth of figuring out exactly what it was that tweaked me. Wondering if you discovered some notage below that was in conflict with the melody's dipsy-doodle???

Glad I could help...appreciate the return ass kickin's.

And, jeez...I love that bass sound....and everything else.

I like the mix and the arrangement, though I think the drums could be more forward.

I dislike the FM piano, but it's a personal taste of mine, and it fits the song.

Nice syncopated ride work, I'm digging on it.

Overall, wow.

personally if i was the engineer i would like to see more clackty clack (high end string definition..rasping) on the bass top end simply to take the whole thing out of of sleepy hollow..that extra dynamic. ..but essentially its real good(excellent!!) but it needs some edges introduced.

Jeff,

I made no changes whatsoever to either the keyboard part or the actual melody; I'm convinced that it was simply the strident timbre of the pan flute patch I was using that was giving you fits. With the creamier tone of a real sax, the tension notes just seem to do their job better; providing *musical* tension, not just audible tension :)

Thanks on the bass sound. Zazz, to your point, I went through that very exercise already with the bass, as I typically like a little edge to it as well; but found it to be a tad intrusive if it were any more pronounced than it is now. I don't want to distract from the *real* players on the track with my disjointed wafflings. :)

BTW, Jeff, I did tweak the placement after this mix; the 2nd guitar solo is closer to center ice now, just a smidge to the right, the melody is about equidistant to the left of center, and they slowly pan outward during the long outro; it's a cool effect. I also narrowed the field a smidge on the phaesy Rhodes, and I rounded off the subsonics on the master EQ a little; that actually ended up clarifying the drums and bass, which was nice.

Creepage,
That FM synth sound was the very first choice I made in instrumenting the tune. I wanted to do something with that vintage DX-7 kind of tone. I'd just watched a Steve Smith drum clinic tape, and his band "Vital Information" played, and they did a tune that had these simple, but meandering chords on a DX7, and I just fell in love with the concept... Thanks for noting the ride; that sort of syncopated halftime feel in the bridge, with the left hand tom and hat accents on the upbeats has become a real staple for me... My ride cymbal has an especially musical and expressive bell, I got really lucky; it's a 21" Zildjian Rock Ride, liberally taped to control the heavy and dark overtones.

I'm away for the Thanksgiving weekend, but I'll be back on Sunday to be listening, critiquing, and having fun. Thanks so much for all your input, it's great to have such ready access to so many educated and sensitive ears to keep me honest! :D

This is very nice, sounds very professional. The flute's been recorded well, everything has space. And you gotta love the chimes.
