I'm interested in the aardvark directmix usb3, and I was wondering if anyone here has opinions or knowlege to share. I was wondering in particular if it can be used as a phono preamp and if the mic preamp is stereo and if it is of reasonable quality overall. I'm looking for something simple and inexpensive, but with good sound. Thanks in advance for any input!

uhm

get the m-audio audiophile

great cheap soundcard
(i asume your talkin about soundcards)

thanks

I'll definately look into it- Heres the thing; I'm going to be primarily recording myslef (on doublebass) from a stereo microphone- So basically i need a preamp and a good soundcard. The audiophile looks like a great sound card but then Id have to get a preamp too, which i have trouble finding apart from dj mixers and really expensive standalone units. The aardvark seems to have them built in- and it acts as a sound card too. I would like to be able to transfer my lps though, so a phono input would be nice.

sorry...

Actually, it has come to my attention that I DONT need a phono input on the setup- only a line in, which i'm sure it has. At this point I care about only two things- cost, and sound quality. I need only one stereo mic input. The aardvark usb3 seems like a good deal- am I missing anything? Id rather not have to get a sound card AND a preamp- thats why I find it attractive. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions- i am rather pressed for time and id like to buy the best thing possible. Thank you!

P.S. (My situation= need to record self on double bass to make cd, through computer.)

hmm

So if I plug my mic into the usb3 i will get a mono output? My microphone is a sony ecm-909. Its plug doesn't resemble the ports on that m-audio.

oh

i see, well let me tell you if you get a separate mic pre, it shouldn't fail. Anyway, I don't really know your budget, but if you can afford it, get the Omni-studio package (m-audio delta 66 card). It has 2 great mic pre's, and its all in a box you control. VERY NICE!!! i have it heh. Beats cards double its price easily (in my opinion). I know it used to be like 400 bucks, may have gone down by now, but its a great card that will last a looong time.

more questions (sorry!)

I'm sorry if i'm asking really obvious questions, but I'm new to the whole computer recording scene so bear with me. The midiman m-audio audiosport duo has two xlr inputs and two trl line input ports. I have a sony ecm-909 microphone, which is stereo, and has a 1/4 stereo jack at the end. Are both the xlr inputs on the audiosport duo connected to individual stereo preamps, or are they both mono, creating one overal stereo preamp? Is the mic input on the aardvark mono? Are there adapters from 1/4 stereo jack to xlr? I want an all-in-one method of 1) using my one stereo microphone to record doublebass onto my computer and 2) transfer lps to my computer. The audiosport seems like a reasonable method, but I still dont understand the situation with the xlr vs 1/4 jacks, stereo vs mono preamps, etc. Could someone clear that up for me? Thanks so much

P.S. I have an old Scott amplifier, and on the back the only outputs are "Rec" outs. Will these be compatible with the line inputs on sound card or m-audio duo? i want to be able to copy my old lps and the duo doesn't have phono inputs.
