I have a dedicated computer system with a Q10 I use for recording, (I will be purchasing a second Q10 with in a month or two, I luv it BTW)

In my old system I had a SB live and I bought a midi controller keyboard to use with it.

Here's my question. Other than buying a new keyboard with its own midi files.
What can I purchase to use my current midi controller with my Q10, I understand that the q10 is basically a midi through device and does not have and wave tables or sounds on it.

I really liked my SB card and the soundfonts that can be downloaded. I refuse to put my SB card in the computer with Q10, too many problems from what I read.

thanks,
Larry

I believe you have two options.
Option 1: a "soft" synthesizer -- runs in your computer
Option 2: a keyboardless synthesizer

The sound from option one is getting better all the time, but some of them can be real cpu hogs.

The bigger problem is that there are about 10 billion different synths, both keyboardless and soft, to choose from.

Good Luck!

Which software app are you using to record? You mention soundfonts...you using sonar?

If your using cubase there are ton's off free vsti's and many of them are really good and don't take alot of resources.

If your using Cakewalk, I can't help much but there are others that I am sure can point you in the right direction.

One more note about soft synths -- Aardvark has just posted a new driver for the Q10 that makes it even more compatible with soft synths.

thanks for the info laptoppop

Bass Master, I use Samplitude as my multi-track software.

on the issue of having a q10 and not wanting to install a sblive in the same system.
Could i play games and listen to music regularly with a q10?
I would have a dual boot on this system so that one hard drive and OS would be 100% audio to avoid conflicts, but the other drive would be for regular use, and would also have to make use of the ardvark
would this work?

ambi,

I have used my q10 for games and listening to music, the only problem I have noticed is there is a known software problem with mp3s. They play but it takes a few seconds for them to load, this is a known isue with aardvark.

Larry

hmm, i listen to a LOT of music, and mostly from the computer in mp3 form, this may be a problem?

Me too ambi,

But for me the quality of the sound recording, outweighs the mp3 issue, like I said they do play its just doesn't load immediately. Now this may be an XP/2000 issue and not win98, I'm not sure.

Good Luck,
Larry

well i supose a slight delay is forgivable.
this may save me some money and put the delta 1010/mackie issue to rest for me.
this way i get more preamps, better preamps, less signal loss cause its all in one unit, save some money, and get the monitor controls on the card.

Is this too good to be true? You can plug quarter inch into the card and bypass the preamps if you have an outboard you fancy?

I can't seem to find any flaws, but then again i haven't really looked into it.

The monitor controls are really nice with a knob on the front panel to adjust volume--very handy!!

Bypassing the pre amps? I'm not sure. You can plug just about any signal into the q10, with the XLR/1/4" combo jack. Using an outboard mixer, you would still have to set the preamps gain for the incoming signal, I do use a tube preamp for my vocal condenser mics the preamp on the q10 is just turned down to match gain.

Just to beat a dead horse, I really do like the preamps on the q10.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this.

I've just reciently started messing with MIDI (ie two days ago) and I will be useing a cheap keyboard as a controller thru my Q10 into Dream Station which comes with SONAR 2.0 XL

Just a point on terminology...

The sounds on a MIDI keyboard are called patches or sounds but not "MIDI files." This term is used to describe a file containing the MIDI messages that trigger a performance of music from a MIDI-compatible synth. That is, the MIDI file is the song and the patches on the keyboard or SB Live's internal synth or softsynth or whatever play the song when the MIDI file's data is sent to them.

The MIDI device on the Q10 is a MIDI interface, meaning it can send and recieve MIDI messages. MIDI Through is a specific connection that some keyboards and sound modules have which lets anything coming in to the MIDI In go straight back out to the MIDI Thru port.

Thanks AlChuck,

That does make it more clear for me. I am not well versed in MIDI, obviously.

Thanks again,
Larry
