Aardvark DP2496 dropouts

I use Sonar 2.0XL with my DP2496

Here is my problem:

Everything works fine if I work right after I turn on or reboot my computer. Everything continues to work fine for hours if I continuously work with audio and Sonar. The problem begins when I don't use audio for about 10 or more minutes, or I don't work with audio constantly. At that point, everything in Sonar lags and will eventually dropout. I will still get sound from the monitors, but no sound levels will register in the Aark Manager Control Panel. The only way to solve this problem was to reboot the pc. But the same things happen again if I stop using audio. This problem always existed, but I'm thinking it shouldn't.

My specs:

Asus P4T-533C Mobo
P4 2.4B GHz Processor
512 RDRAM
40gig 7200rpm Seagate HD (OS)
60gig 7200rpm Maxtor HD (Audio)
Aardvark DP2496 Soundcard
SB Live Soundcard
Nvidia GeForce3 Graphics card
Sonar 2.0XL
Win XP Pro

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Why do you have the SB live card in there? Do you really really really need it?

Are you using A|WDM drivers for Sonar? On the Aardvark website are a couple of articles about how to set up those drivers specifically with Sonar for best low latency performance.

Just a couple of thoughts,

Lee,

I keep the SB card for gaming and other less intense sound needs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Aardvark works or is meant to work with all "other" functions of sounds besides music.

And yes, I set up everything per Aardvarks website utilizing the A|WDM drivers for Sonar.

Thanks for the response.

Yo yo yo, problem solved for ya man.

I had the exact same problem with my aardvark Q-10 using Cubase. The problem IS the soundblaster. I e-mailed aard and CS replied telling me do disable the SB in my control panel-system area. I did it and it did the trick. My cuz uses dual 24/96's piggybacked and he had to do the same thing.

I know the manual says that their products work fine side by side with consumer grade cards, but it obviously isn't the case since that was the first answer out of their mouths and it was the one that did the trick. I suppose you can turn it back on when you want to play games.

If you have more problems you want to make sure your system sounds are off as well...this can cause slowdown and freezes with pro grade soundcards.

Good luck ;)

OK, this is a puzzler.

The Aardvark website says that it should be fine with a Soundblaster card. Personally, I don't like mixing brands of sound devices in one system, but it *should* be fine...

It looks like the Aardvard should work fine with programs that use the normal windows way of addressing sound, but some games go below that level for whatever reason, so you might try it with the programs you care about.

I am very interested in this particular interface. Except for the problem you are having -- how do you like the sound? The specs are outstanding, and its gotten great reviews -- I just like hearing opinions from people who actually use it.

Bass Master "K",

Yo yo yo, thanks, dude! It worked. I disabled the SB, reboot my pc, left it alone for about an hour, and "voila" it still worked! Thanks, bro.

Lee,

Thanks for your help as well. I haven't used it intensively yet, but it sounds and works great so far! The only problem is that the integrated effects don't work all the time. But I record everything "dry"and can use the effects along with Sonar, so it's no big deal to me. Actually, I haven't tested the effects after disabling the SB card. Maybe that did the trick. Great card, though. Best price at www.digitalproaudio.com. Good luck.

Thanks again...love this forum!

Glad I could help whatta...

I had my system running sweet except for that problem with my q-10 going to sleep. Finally drove me crazy enough I e-mailed them and they had the answer to me within an hour.

Needless to say I was pissed I waited so long to e-mail them!
I have had like 5 months of no problems, drop-outs or crashes, everything works perfect and it rocks the house. The aardvark line kicks it for sure. :D

Glad its working for you! Looks like Bass Master and I were typing at the same time. <grin>

The integrated effects are only supposed to work at 48K sampling and below -- not at 96K. Could that be why they didn't work for you sometimes? Were you experimenting with the sound at 96k?

Now that you've got the SB disabled... does the Aardvark provide sound for the games?

Thanks,
-lee-

Lee,

Unfortunately, I knew about the effects only working at < or = 48k. The Aardvark guys said it was a known driver issue that they're "working" on. The reverb acts like an inverted volume knob because as I turn the reverb level up, the output level goes down. The compression is also a bit "staticy." But the recordings are nice and clean when recorded dry. So, once again, it's not a huge issue for me. I also tried gaming with the SB disabled, but that led to my pc freezing up. No matter, enabling and disabling the SB is no big deal...just a couple clicks of the mouse. I appreciate your help, though.

Thought I'd also let you know that, at one time, I had both the dp2496 and the Midiman Omni Studio/Delta 66 card. I thought that the dp2496 was a bit more user friendly to me than the Delta 66. I like the Aark Manager interface better than Midiman has theirs set up. Just a personal preference. I did notice that the dp2496 had a background "hiss" from the monitors, but the "hiss" was undetectable in the headphones and the recordings. I'm assuming it's from cable quality. Aardvark's has been notorious for being slow on updating drivers, but it seems like users on this forum complain more of the Midiman drivers.

Bass Master,

I totally understand what you mean. I had my dp2496 for more than 6 months running like this, and thought it was just another one of Aark's driver issues. But I started to get so frustrated that when the card froze, I quit recording for the day to avoid rebooting all the time. For the heck of it, I posted my problem. Now I can enjoy recording rebootless. Thanks again.
