I have an Athlon XP 2600. Apparently it is too old for SSE support. AA 2.0 requires SSE support. WHat do I do get a new PC? Damn! Is there any way around this?

I'm no computer expert, but I believe that SSE can be enabled with an AMD Athlon. That's what I'm running, and it works fine with AA 2.0.

You might google "Enable SSE" and see what you get. If you can't do it (no offense, I wouldn't try myself), most towns have computer shops that could do it for you.

I already upgraded my cpu from an Athlon 1700+ to a 2600+ myself. I am pretty sure I am at the top of the line for my MoBo running 133 Mhz Front Side Bus. I either have to replace the MobO and my HDD because it's an IDE and most new MoBo's come with Serial HDD's, or I could spend about the same amount and get a $400-500 New Dell. I searched for enabling SSE, but all I got out of it was "Athlon's supported SSE halfway through the production line" meaning earlier Athlons like my 2600 don't have it. I'll look around again though, maybe I missed something.

May have solution

Turns out my processor is running as a 1100 Duron. I think my MoBo bios is out of date, once I update that I think SSE will work on my processor. The cpu is a 2600+, but the MoBo is confused.

You could check to see if your Athlon actually does have SSE using SiSoft Sandra (free for private users).

There are still some socket A Semprons available, which are really later AthlonXP and according to AMD, all Sempron badged Socket A chips have SSE instruction support. I recently replaced an 1800XP with a Sempron 3000, really a Barton core Athlon XP chip. Worked perfectly once I'd set the bus speed switch on my Gigabyte mobo for 166 FSB. At 133FSB it worked, but was only recognised as a 2100 AthlonXP.

Just seen your update, if it's recognised as a Duron, could be your FSB is set to 100!

The FSB was set to 100

But I keep setting it back to 133. It works for a while then occasionally it will revert back to 100 FSB on a restart. But none this matters anyhow, SSE2 isn't supported until AThlon 64. That's what soomeone mentioned in another thread I posted.

I'm having a similar problem... I had cooledit pro2 running on my machine for 2years.. I downloaded AA2 trial ver. It ran no problem.. Last month I had a major PC meltdown lost my O/S and everything (XPpro).. I have reloaded and I am trying to install AA2.. But guess what no SSE..I'm totally confused..

I had the same problem with one of my Athlon machines - I would set it to 133 and it wouldn't utilize the full processor speed, oddly it was related to my video card and when I set it to 100 FSB it would max out to its potential processor speed.
