a years worth of recording... just... vanished...

well, just to pump some more crash and lostness into this sea of missing files thread.....

Today a bunch of my music files/ track files, just disappeared and cannot be found!
with numerous "searches" coming up with nada....

I guess this is like the old days of a tape developing dropout spots, or maybe melted on a dashboard, or left by a magnetic source and garbled up....

the song icon is there, and the date details.....but when clicked on the icon, the recording software pops up but no tracks are loaded!

it says "some media files are missing"....

when it should say "media files are f*&^% gone forever for no known reason"

damn. luckily 90% of it was garbage, but still what if it was good stuff?

EDIT?>>>> Found what happened......my son who shares this stuff, told me he had erased everything so the pc would work better.

thats nice

Keep your USB flash drive away from strong magnets, ranjam. They not only lose all their info, they are toast after that- can not be formatted, or anything.

Flash drives are not affected by magnetic fields (unless you bought a Microdrive that just happens to have a CompactFlash card form factor, that is, in which case it's really not a flash drive).

USB flash drives are, however, susceptible to data loss by looking at them the wrong way. They're almost universally designed so poorly that if they work for more than a few weeks, it's a freaking miracle.

Hmm. Haven't seen (or at least noticed) any loss with them yet. My acoustic band rotates a bunch of them for our tracks, I have about another eight around my DAW...

You've got to invest in an internet free dedicated DAW and back up everything if you're going to take this seriously..Seems pretty obvious but even in the short space of two years Ive been doing this Ive fried two hard drives and all the early rubbish I did

I share a PC with my wife for the internet and am constantly in trouble for deleting things

I was just going to ask about this. Sorry to hear about losing all your info, but shouldn't a persons home recording comp be one that is NOT EVER connected to the internet ?? Seems to me like thats just askin for trouble

I think some folks do it just fine with the right precautions I guess.

I'm not that good enough with ccomuters, just don't care to guess about it.

Man, I managed to export tracks off my tascam into my laptop to mix after ANOTHER memory card crashed (i have to call TEAC now) and guess what... MY LAPTOP JUST CRASHED
clearly the tech lords arent fans of my music. luckily i emailed the 2 songs to a few people so i can hopefully get them to email back those mixes.
still everything else is gone :(
