Recently, I've been sound-treating a free room in my apartment, with the intent of being able to do semi-decent monitoring in there. I built a window box (plug) filled with sheetrock and fiberglass, installed a London 14 Primacoustic kit (sans scatter blox... they'd have to go on the closet (vocal booth) door
)
Compared to before, there was much less of a slapback echo, way fewer early reflections, and certain bass notes wouldn't boom as they had before ... (with the hum-test
)
I realized I had to set everything up symmetrically, so that's what happened.... with exception of the lazy placing of the monitor stands. I figured I'd get around to it later...
...so here I am, talking (as it were) out of my behind sometimes
about mixes that people posted in the mp3 clinic... all this time, I'm wondering what the "blurry" sensation was that I was getting. Even when a mix seemed balanced EQ-wise, there was a distinct feeling of "non-clarity". I wondered if my own mixes could sound good in there at all... I tried everything I could think of -- including more takes
Tonight, I finally break down on a whim and place the monitor stands with help from a trusty measuring tape. Whoa. Big difference.... or is it?
It's enough of a difference that the good mixes I hear on it sound ... like something you could take a bite out of... full, rich, and focused. And much to my relief, my mixes don't sound as bad as I first thought

The lesson is: don't skip steps, and don't be lazy
like a certain dumbass that will remain nameless
