a vote for the best

I have a hard time commenting on the hip hop tunes as I feel I'm not qualified. I think I'll wander in though and try. I suppose the worst that could happen is someone could tell me to dummy up.

I don't listen to that many tunes... But I'd say Crawdad is worth listening too, as he proved with his Lt.Bob collaboration. Class act... I remember listening to one of Emerics tunes, that was pretty good too... And one of Ola that was funny as hell. But he moved out I guess.

I really should listen to more tunes here... So now I know where I'll start. hehe... And I even got mentionned in here. Wow. The honour is too much. I don't deserve it. Thanks anyway. ;)

My vote is for all of you!

I've been soooo impressed by the talent, composing, arranging
and recording skillz that have displayed in this forum!!!

Ya'll make me proud to be a member here!!

I think Emeric is one of the most talanted human beings I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. Other awesome musicians are DavidK, Erland, Buck62, B.SABBATH, and lately I am crazy about the song "Go away, so I don't have to say it" by bradpax.

Laj35--Everybody's got their niche and taste. Make the music ya want! Still, you can't expect everybody to embrace techno or hip hop, just as I don't expect hip hop fans to like bluegrass or hard core country. Its all too easy for people to dismiss a style and say "thats not real music" isn't it? If your crusade is to get people to open up to ALL kinds of music, I'm with you 100%.Like samicide says, its a two way street.

I'll check out some Dr. Dre if you check out some George Jones! :D

I'll modify my original entry... (so as not to sound too much like a Erland fanatic.. :p )

To be more specific... I think Erland has the best stuff as far as "hit" potential.. I can definitely foresee a few of his tunes being played on the radio,.. no doubt. As for the recordings... he doesn't have the "best" mixes, by any means... but he does do a good job of capturing a natural sounding performance.. as if you're sittin' right there in the room with him listening to him play.

For mix and song quality I would also pick Macle. He's got some good songs (creative and catchy) and his mixes are a very good quality.

For mix quality alone, I think chucknkd wins that title hands down. He doesn't post as much around here,.. but the songs he referenced in this thread are mind blowing. There is no descernable quality difference between what he has posted on his website, and what makes it to the radio today. I can only dream that someday I'll be able to put out mixes that nice using my own home equipment.

So that's my top three list... I still think Erland tops it, because he doesn't just have some kind of schooled "know-how"... he's got raw talent... and I'd take that any day over a butt-load of high-end gear, or advanced mixing abilities.

That is crazy! I cannot believe he did that at home. I haven't been around this board too long but I have to admit I hear something great everyday here. First thing I downloaded was Erland's "from a boy to a girl" and I've been addicted to this site ever since.

I don't know if the recent collaboration activity will continue but I think that's about to display the strength of what multiple minds/talents/perspectives can accomplish and we'll someday be voting on the most impressive group effort.

Oh yeah, I was supposed to vote right? I guess Erland does "rule" as far as what I've heard so far but there are too many honorable mentions to mention and I don't want to leave anyone out.

By the way, homerecording.com/bbs gets my vote for most addictive place on the net for a guy who loves to write and record music but is stuck in an office 8 hours a day and spends nights up late trying to come up with something worthy of posting.

Hey Crawdad,

First off, I am definitely not a hip-hop dude persay. I love alot of old school, and (IMO) "real" hip-hop: KRS One, Biz Markie, Jurassic 5, The Roots, Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Tricky, but by no means does that take up even one tenth of my listening. In all honesty I listen to a bit TOO much radiohead and then pretty much spread the rest out from ambient electronica, to Johnny Cash, to REM, to experimental electronica, to trance, everything really. But I'd love to exchange or dare I say challenge one another with albums/artists that the other would never normally listen to, just to see what happens. You say George Jones huh? He one of your favorites? Which album in particular? If you want I have some definite ideas for you, get back to me. And hey this goes for anybody else who wants to step up to the plate, I'd love to hear ten albums/artists I've never heard before!

You should give Muse a try if you haven't. They are like radiohead+a bit of elctronic, but, I don't think they are musically as good as radiohead tho. Just a thought.

AL

Yeah I've heard some of their stuff and I agree with you on the similarity and also on the gap in musicality (???) which is why I can't really dig them--it seems like they are trying to emulate Radiohead in a lot of ways, but are just falling short, so I just listen to Radiohead. Thanks for the tip though!!!!!!!

This is the list of my favorite musicians from HR in the order that I discovered them. I have filled up one cd already of mp3s, and listen to it almost every day. Sorry guys, but you made it available for download, and if I like it i'm gonna snatch it. In fact, I am proud of my unique collection of music and play it for friends.

Thank you all for giving me the greatest pleasure of listening to your music. My list will be ever growing, so keep on posting. :)

Hey, thanks to those who mentioned me, I really appreciate it! This place is truly great, and the feedback I've gotten here has been a huge help.

I don't really like the idea of picking who's best, cuz Home Recording is HARD (at least it is to me) , and everyone has different tastes and styles, and they're all valid, so cheers to everyone. (I think Scott Tansley, who's rocknroll mixes are fuckin great, definitely rules for best video!! :D)

Hey WATYF, I really appreciate you mentioning me, and I agree completely with your last statement there about raw talent being more important than gear amd mixing abilties, but there's something about the way you worded it here that seems kind of insulting (maybe I'm just paranoid). I have a few pieces of decent gear, no "schooled know-how" at all in music or recording, and I'd like to believe that I have at least some talent :(.

Macle:

I would still vote for you even if you redo your songs with just vocals and acoustic guitar. Simply because the structure of your tunes. There is something about your stuff, complex, yet well organized that I don't get lost in it, which is what I truely admire.

by the way, are you going to put "Buzz" back on your site? I didn't have a chance to download it before, and now I miss it :(

AL

Erland...wow..

I haven't been around much lately, and never spent a bunch of time in the clinic in the first place, but man, I'm gonna have to make more time! Just discovered erland from this thread tonight and I'm really hoping there's a full length, fully produced cd in the future. I've found 4 of his songs so far in various forms. Can anyone tell me how many are here?

I'm an admirer of Slackmaster2k's "accessible" songs: Monday, Bad Day.

Is Tubedude still posting? Very nice sounding stuff.

Sonusman? pretty impeccable mixes. Last I saw, seems he was mad at someone. Maybe he left?

How many people have high speed access?
How do you download so much music????!!!

LOL.. It wasn't a cloaked insult.. :p I wasn't trying to imply that if you have nice gear that it must be that you're trying to compensate for lack of talent.. :p nor was I implying that Erland was the only one aroond here with any talent... I was just saying.. in the over-all grand scheme of things.. if I had to choose.. I would take raw talent over a great mix or the world's nicest condensor mic. :p Now, there are those who have all three.. :) and how nice that must be.... :D

Hey AL, thanks, that's very cool of you to say. Stripping em down may not be a bad idea, cuz I'm getting pretty burnt out on these big productions!! :)

Yes, Buzz is back up there.

Yes, that must be nice. :) Okay, sorry about my paranoia...guess I misunderstood. Btw, I don't blame you for digging Erland, he's great (hey Erland, you're great!, and thanks to you, too.) But, you know, we're all great, so like I said, cheers to everyone.

A pet peeve of mine is when someone reviewing a clinic post says something like, "hey, that's pretty good, better than most of the shit around here." Why knock other people? I just don't think this place should be a competition. (I'm not saying you do that, btw.)

Anyway, sorry again about misunderstanding and thanks again! :)

Macle

Oh no.. don't get me wrong...

I have no problem at all saying that Erland's stuff is much better than most of what's around here.. :D I'm a pull-no-punches type o' guy... :p I mean,.. I suppose I could lie to spare people's feelings...

eh...

nah... I couldn't.

:D
