Hey, I wasn't too sure where to post this so im posting it here.

On with the quistion... I was wondering if anyone knows how to make your vocals raspier, Other than my unhealthy way of smoking cigarettes untill i can't breath? I know Thats not the best thing for a singer to do, And if i could quit i would...But if i could just find a way to keep my voice a little raspy when i do eventually quit, that'd be awesome.

Thanks.

The only real way to find this out is just try different effects on your vocals until you find something that sounds right to you. I think the best place to start is distortion like DJL said.

As far as not being able to quit, I can tell absolutely, that if you believe you can or can't do ANYTHING, then your belief is correct. If you want to quit, then the very first thing you should do is start telling yourself that you can with as much passion and conviction as possible. whyquit.com is a great resource to help break the dependency. (I am not preaching, I speak from experience)

I don't think using effects is the answer to your problem. If you want to sound good singing then learn how to sing, it's that simple. Your voice is just another instrument and you need to learn how it works and how to use it.

Like any wind instrument you need air and you need to control the speed and volume. To increase your volume you have to learn how to breath correctly. To breath correctly you have to have a healthy set of lungs. Smoking and raspy singing or screaming = throat cancer. The best thing to do for your lungs is sprinting on the track.

The source of your sound is another important consideration. To sing raspy you need to start the sound deep in your chest and develop the sound at the base of your throat. If you have weak lungs then your going to be dealing with coughing up flem all the time, no way around it, well cept for quiting smoking. Try starting the souce of your sound in your nose. Oh, sound like Dylan, what a surprise :) As long as you don't smoke through your nose that'll work. But even if you don't quit, running is the best thing you can do for your lungs, your singing and just your health and attitude in general.

Grab yourself a book from your local library and/or get yourself a vocal instructor and NEVER QUIT QUITTING.

Come as close as you can to eating the mic when you sing. The proximity effect will enhance any rumble and grit that are there....
