A violinist without an orchestra

Over the last 16 years, I've had a few Zoom products ranging from Fx pedals for bass and guitar, a 12 track multitracker and an FX unit and none of them have been bad at all. A friend of mine has the H4n and is currently raving about it and he's on the verge of the pro world. I'm of the opinion that everything works and whatever you have is what you use. At the end of the day, there's a hundred different ways to get from London to Glasgow but who cares, as long as you enjoy Glasgow while you're there ?

Just a little update...I just snagged a used Marantz PMD620 on eBay for less than half the new price! That will leave most of my budget for later when hopefully I'll have more experience and know better what I want/need. :D

Hopefully, the recorder will work fine and I'll be on my way. I assume that even with this simple recorder I'll have a full plate to select a room, to use it well, and of course to practice, practice, practice.

Thanks all!

Great to hear. check back in with some clips after you have practiced, practiced, practiced. :)

Sorry to impede on your thread, Flycrash, but I've gotta say it's great to see DavidK back again. Even if it's just a little here and there.

Cheers!! (we now return to our regularly scheduled thread)

About the H4n, I've heard recordings of someone doing acoustic guitar and vocals in a bedroom and it sounded very good. Ah, but I see you bought the marantz. Please post up something when you can, it would be nice to hear out it sounds.

Cheers, (again)

Here's a little bump:

The PMD620 fell through (the seller seemingly disappeared from the face of the earth, and I kind of worry that something awful happened to him or her). This was my first time using eBay's customer service to get a refund, and I have to say it went pretty well, though it did take some weeks to complete the process, secure the refund, and get on with things.

Then I visited my parents, and I got a bit of a surprise cash gift from my dad. Between the gift and the refund I was able to fund a PMD661! It should be here Monday.

I look forward to posting a little recording as soon as I can.

Hey all!

I love the recorder - it sounds *way* more clear and natural than those old tape recordings.

Here's a simple piece (Dvorak's Humoresque) I recorded this morning in my bedroom. I played it cold, the performance itself is far from perfect, and I haven't done anything to the raw track. But maybe it will be informative or enjoyable for somebody...

Thanks again for all of the advice! :)

Could you upload it to a place that doesn't require us to complete a survey to listen to it? I understand that you want to make a little bit of money there, but no one is going to complete a survey to hear a sample of your recorder.

You could try http://www.lightningmp3.com, or even just upload it straight to the forum (I think they allow that now somehow... I haven't done it yet).

Ugh, didn't know about the survey.

No, of course I'm not even hoping to make money off of my bedroom recordings!

Maybe I'll find a different hosting site...

Edit: OK, this recording was pretty much for my mom and dad, and that survey's totally obnoxious, so I got the premium service for now...there shouldn't be a survey anymore.

I've always liked that piece, but like many, don't know what they're called off the top of my head.
I thought the playing was damn good.
