Hopeful

Just a simple two part improvisation in free form. I was about to change back to heavier strings on my small bodied acoustic so thought I'd record something on it to remember how it sounded with the super light gauge set (starting with .009). Not a big sound but kind of light and sweet maybe. Wasn't thinking of a particular title when playing it but it sounded "hopeful" to me when listening back so that's why the name. Any suggestions for fattening up the sound?

Tim

top class tim...

sounds great.... and thats listening to it through the tiny speaker on my pocket pc/mobile phone

i'll listen on my monitors tomorrow...

keep it up!

I wise man once told me "if you have a hard on and want to keep it, don't fuck with it".
Nuff said.

Tim man, your stuff is just great. I always try to help out and make suggestions to anyone, but I never have anything with you. It always sounds as professional acoustic as it gets to my ears.
Keep up the good work :) And I'll keep trying to find something to suggest, maybe I will one day.

I think it sounds great, but since you asked... as far as fattening an acoustic sound I don't have much experience.. I finally just bought a mic good enough to record acoustic so I'm learning. But what works for me so far is to either widen the sound in the stereo field and raise the volume some or double track in the stereo field. To me that makes it sound like one bigger fatter sounding acoustic. Personally, I like your light sweet sound here though.

This is just so relaxing. Nice tune ;)

Wow!...those are .009's??? That sounds pretty fat to me as it is. I'd love to hear how much thicker it can sound. Besides that, that is some sweet playing, my friend. I don't know anything about recording acoustic guitar, so I have no wisdom to offer. All I can say is that this is as pro sounding as I can imagine a so-called "quick" recording can be. Great stuff, as always Tim

Tim, listened a second time....Still, very nice. Wish I had some words, but this escapes me. The sounds have more feeling, than anything. They just feel very nice. Peaceful. Well recorded. Sounds like I was there to watch you play this. I would love to see you do this. See how you pick the notes, and see your reaction to the sounds produced. It's a very smooth melody. No parts, just a continuation of sound. Very nice....

Funny that Dog says that, because when I was listening to it, I almost felt tears come to my eyes, and then I said "Come on, it can't be THAT emotional, there are no words..." but the music in this is very strong.

i am just as impressed with this as i am with pretty much anything else you record; bravo!

Yep... just listened on my monitors... and it sounds better than I imagined it would... theres the type of warmth there that I am seeking for my recordings and forever failing to get...

How did you record this Tim... did you use the same mics to record this as you did the piece you recorded for The Nells? I forget what they were called...

Has your room been treated acoustically?

Cheers

Yep, same mic…. Schoeps mk41 about 2 ft out from the neck/body joint. I’ve got Auralex panels up in the room to reduce reflections, and the room’s got a peaked ceiling. Thanks for the listen Al. We’ve got to do some more music together. :)

:D Heh-heh, I’ll remember that one. Thanks Track Rat!

SnakeDog, thanks for the great comments… I should spend some time experimenting with doubling things and mixing creatively. Good ideas.

Rami, Ed, shiatsu, apl, you guys are very kind… glad you liked it. :)

I sure like that image. Thanks Nakatira.

Hey Tim I actually downloaded this yesterday and meant to reply yesterday so I have actually listened to it probably 20 times if that tells ya anything about how much i loved this one. Sounds wonderful, brilliant playing as usual. I personally thought the panning was nice, let the seperation really come out on my system.
Loved the song

take care

Riku, Gary and Jack, thanks for listening and the supportive comments.

I like the spatial...sounds like the rythm is a bit left and the lead a bit right...almost how you might see this being played live.

Great clarity, and, of course, great playing. A few strange transitional notes, but that's the great thing about improv.

Is the lead using fingers too? If so, very cool. I never did find a good technique for lead playing via fingers. :( Maybe someday.

Tim, how did you mic this? ie...what kind, how many, pre...etc...
I am trying to mic my wife playing her acoustic, and so far, the results aren't that great. She plays pretty quietly. How close to the mic)s) are you?
Thanks.
