now, if somebody could tell me how to fix my HUGE sibilance problem without compressing all the SSSsss's to the point of distortion, I'd really appreciate it) - that's why I think my vocals sound like they're distorting a lot.

Maybe try using a slight "Z" in place of some S's while you're singing them. As far as polishing a turd goes, I sure hate cutting out a whole vocal frequency range just for one letter.

As far as the volume maximizer goes, I don't think I dare to use that. Sounds like heroin.

I usually just separate sections (Vocals, guitars, etc) by putting each on it's own Main. Then I mix those mains as hot as they'll go and still mix together well.

I have trouble even stepping into the whole mastering thing with any confidence, so I do all my business in the tracking and mixing stage. Mix 'em hot, call it good...lol. I used to try to master using the presets in Wavlab. Once Sam helped me hear the problems it basically scared me out of ever using a preset again!

But it sounds like you mixes are improving at a healthy rate to me! Sorry for the rant, I'm just kinda picking peoples brains about what they do for post mix.

Thanks...

LOL she inherited sibilance. That could be a new phrase among pompous music snobs. :D

Previously AKGC3000 thru Lexicon FX unit (for gain) to soundcard (SBLive).

Recently Studio Projects C-1 through DMP3 pre to Delta, (I can't remember the number right now...cheaper card)

I wouldn't have thought there would be anything wrong with that chain. I do recognise the C1 sound on your voice and the way it fizzes the silibance (kinda scooped sound), which is not unpleasant.

I use an NTK through a focusrite Voicemaster. The Voicemaster has a de-esser that works really well in combination with the NTK... with my older NT1 it kinda wrecked the sound before it tamed it. However nowadays I've ditched the use of both the de-esser AND popfilter in favour of a cleaner sound... I just make sure I don't directly face the mic .. just sing 20deg off to one side .. controls pops and silibance .. I've been happy so far. The NTK is set up very close to a floor to ceiling diffusor which I believe also helps fill the sound out.

Whatever works.

What about your software ?

preliminary indication: HOLDING

myself  it's that good

The fiddle was nice, and it seemed to have an overall better flow.

More comments later when I'm not at school :p

sounds really nice guys!
mr.k's violin helps out a bunch

A great listen!

its seems crazy... we're only on this earth for a second in history

Bingo.

and dres, I'm using cooledit 2.0. sorry for the slow response, dres...mixing.

Even better than the last time I listened. Nice work guys. Please let me know when it's final so I can dl & drag to my keepers folder ;) :D

Chris--You're on a DAW of some kind, right? When I get some bad sibilance, I dive right into the waveform, isolate the offending small piece, and trim it down with a plug in. I leave the rest of the vocal track alone. It works better than applying some global EQ to everything, I think.

Awsome Chris, I love the strings. Check your PM if you haven't already.

Crawdad once you have isolated the offending freq do you just use EQ to bring it down or some other plug in?

chris, I had listened to this song a few days ago when I was just cruising the board, listening, trying to figure out where and how to load songs onto a sight. (I’m a real rookie)

I'm not sure if it was this version or not.

It's a great tune.

It's very professional. I'm envious. It's obvious you've been at it for a while. I only have done a few tunes but I know what I like and it reeks with quality. I noticed your name on the top10 list over there, as I was surprised to see mine. I didn't see if it was this tune or another of yours and I'm having trouble getting back on the sight. I lost the last 15 seconds on this song also????

I take it you got the primer I posted for you, but dude, you don't need any help. I thought it was excellent????

I'll be picking your brain if you'll let me.

I got the primer, thanks. Actually, I printed it, LOL. I have probably 5 of those charts taped to my monitors, and they're all different, which is cool because it gives me ideas when stuff's not sounding right. Personally, I'm amazed you haven't been recording very long. My first recordings sounded NOTHING like yours...they barely qualified as music at all, lol. Anyway, thanks for the post. I think the real strings on this tune make me sound a lot better than I am, but I'm always happy to share the *VERY* limited stuff I know with anybody. It's how we grow.

Oh yeah, and start a new thread for your new tune...NOW...lol.

Thanks again.

Jagular - This is the last version I'm doing with my vocal. I'm working on mixing another one with Dres on drums, bass, and lead vocal. Thanks for listening (again).

dudleys100 - thanks man, I sent you a PM.

That is a great tune Chris. I am not worthy... I must not comment...

Ok it sounded great wish I had patients to do something that mattered..

I am down now you made me depressed.....

Great song!

Good stuff... no real apparent mix problems. Violin fits right in, now. Cello does very nicely. There's that line again "and thru it a-all!" the "harris" soul sound.

You don't mind if this song forever reminds me of "Maggie", do you? Two big downers within a week :( Music like this reminds me not to be an ass all the time... makes you want to be a better person.

Would give a more energetic response but... wouldn't ya know it? I've got a flu bug now (... yep... on the day off :o)... this song kind of suits my subdued flow right now. As peace-rick is known to say:

thank's man

Chad

I'm speechless......

I usually dislike this sort of stuff, but oh my, i was almost crying!!

Absolutely awesome.
Well done Chris!

BTW, DavidK recorded the violin right? hey david - do you have any suggestions for recording the violin? mic placement, mixing?

when i did it it sounded rather empty and had to use chorus - but then it sounded less realistic.

anyhow WOWOWOWOWOWOW

love it - great harmonies

Just when you thinks it's done...it gets even sweeter (is that a word?)...more sweet? I like sweeter.

Great!

chris, I just wanted to pass on that I e-mailed your link to my favorite nephew, Bassist for the Utah Symphony. I figure he’ll really appreciate the whole project more than some others. I'll give you some feedback when I hear from him.

I jut though the idea was cool. We're really proud of him.

I figured you might get a kick out of it.

Joe

Nice work. Touching, and the violin really adds to it all.
