As a HomeRec'er, you should really be familiar with the CD burning process. At the very least you should be aware of the differences between an audio CD and a data CD, and how to appropriately configure your software. You should also be aware of "multisession CD's", and what it means to "close" a CD, and how this works in your software.

And you should *always* check your CD before you send it to someone. It's best to check the CD in a regular CDROM drive, preferably in a totally different computer. Don't just assume the CD is good because you can list the files on it either...try to copy the files to the hard drive.

So far I've gotten 2 bad CD's. One was completely messed up, and the other simply had an open session. Luckily I was able to close the session and use the CD, but it's sort of a software-dependent process....Nero doesn't like to close sessions started by EZCD Creator, for instance.

Make that 2 completely hosed CD's and one with an open session....

Oh, and those little slim cases seem to do a better job of holding CD's than the regular sized jewels. Just put a piece of scotch tape on em so they don't open up. You don't have to put any padding around the jewel case at all, especially if the CD is held tightly inside.

Oh, and when you send the producer of your favorite comp cd a submission, enclosing a little extra something personal like a note or a copy of your band's CD, it makes him like you more! :)

slack i WOULD have sent you a copy of my c.d. ....but ill be damned if i can figure out how to close my session....and well i ran out of full size jewel cases too.......:D

IT WAS MEEEEEEEEEEE

I'M THE GUILTY ONE!!!!!!!!!

CRAP...........

All this while I thoght I knew WTF I was doing.

Thanks Slack! Your the man for putting this all together! :)

I wish I had a CD of my band to send you. I wish I had a band. I wish I had a CD... :)

Now that you mention it, I had to use ol' Windows' CD burning software and I have no idea whether it closes the session or not.
My guess, seeing as its a Microsoft product, is that it intuitively knows when you want and does the opposite.

Good tip about the tape. I wouldn't figure the CD case would have room to pop open in that envelope, but never hurts to be safe.

Take care,
Chris

uh, oh

Hey Chris...I bet you'll have a cd of your very own to send along with your submission for the next Homerecording.comp CD.

Now I'm all nervous....I think I closed my data cd and did things correctly...I did use EZ CD creator though....did the label get smudged so as to be unreadable?....did the postman drop it and shatter the disc?.....did I spell my name right?........

Just out of curiosity Slack; why did you want data cds instead of audio cds?

If mine was one of the culprits I'm sorry Slack. Don't let it hold up the project though. But I'd still like to get a copy of the comp even if my cd was bad and the tune doesn't make it on there.

I just had an idea that may or may not be good. Why don't we put both comp cds on cdbaby.com? They support independent music and it would only have to sell a few copies to pay for itself and then everything after that would be profit for Homerecording.com.

I don't know if it's practical but I thought it was worth putting the idea out there. It seems like there's got to be some things we could do to market the compilation.

Still can't wait to hear the finished product. Hope the producing is going smoothly Slack.

P.S. I'm still working on getting a show at the Zebra. The booker's voice mail box has been full the last couple times I've called though. Man, booking is a pain.

Tucci, I got yours early on and your submission was fine. I've talked about the differences between audio and data CD's a great length if you check the forum a bit....I should put that in the FAQ.

It's really not that big of a deal if there are problems with a submission early on...as long as the submitter tried to get me everything on time. Next comp cd I'll definately put up better information for people!

Hey Slack,

Your information was clear enough- at least to me. If I screwed up it was because I was squeezing mailing of my CD in between 23,145 other tasks in town.

Instructions about how to burn CD's might not be a bad idea, though, for folks who are coming from the analog world. Its not an easy thing to get right the first 2 or 3 times. I work with a group of people that has been around computers for a while and I still get...

"Why doesn't my CD burner work, techie guy? No one can read my CD's! Its broken! God hates me! Whaaaa-haah-haah-haaaaaahhhhhnnnn!!!!"

"You wouldn't be using Direct CD, would you?"

"Why, yes! How did you know? You're a genius! You're psychic! Does that mean you can fix my CD burner!? Will it still be oh-so-easy to use!? It has to be easy or I'll think you're a moron..."

"Groan...."

:D

Take care,
Chris

More tips when sending in CD's:

Send it in a JEWEL CASE you cheapskate! :) I swear to god....folded up tissue boxes, folded up envelopes...man oh man. Not only does your CDR get all scratched up, possibly delaying things, but I have to provide a jewel case for you so that I can file your submission.

Try to only send one mix on one cd when doing things like compilations. Consider that I right now have > 30 submissions to keep track of...and it's really hard to "remember to use a particular file on a particular CD" when doing your submission. Yeah I enter the filename into my handydandy database, but it still leaves room for error. Plus when I put the comped CD's together I'm going to have to go "wtf?" and go looking back through your info...etc etc.

And this one has nothing to do with sending CD's really, but more about this particular comp cd....that little checklist I made up is your FRIEND. A majority of the people who sent in wrong forms or forgot to include something did not use the checklist!

Oh, and one more thing while I'm "venting"....the submission fee was $20 + shipping & handling ($2 domestic or $5 international).

Finally, to the funny guy who sent his submission on the 2nd....very funny. :)

I was going to send $30 instead of $22, but I thought trying to "tip" the producer might get me in trouble. :D

I guess I'll just have to pre-order a few CDs for my band mates. I was going to wait and make sure our song got in, but it sounds like everyone is going to "get in".
