A slow build up

Schwarzenyaeger

Formerly "Dog-In-Door"
I wrote a song that is based off of a pattern that repeats every twenty seconds or so. Every time it repeats, something is added. I wrote and recorded everything over the course of this evening.

*new version further down*

How do you guys like it?
Can you hear all the parts being introduced?

Very cool, laid back. Builds to a nice blend. Smooth on the end. Very nice. Sort of thing to listen to on a lazy Sunday afternoon when you're just chillin' :D

The piano part tends to blend with the bass and guitar separately but they can still be distinguished, a little low scoop on the piano would probably eliminate that.

Cool concept, my comments are more stylistic. Rather than EQ on the piano, I would go up the keyboard and use notes that are more pronounced. I would also suggest making the additions less subtle. Give the song a bit more progression.

Just thoughts, but I do like the concept. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the listens, everybody!
@mjbphotos: I had the low note on the piano there to kind of give the whole thing more of a bass since the bass guitar is jumping around higher notes most of the time. Are you talking about an 80Hz or more like a 200Hz scoop?
@DM60: I actually had the piano parts an octave higher than they are currently but I didn't like it too much. I felt like it intruded on the guitar's space too much. But I think I might mimic the piano's basic movement an octave higher up towards the end.

I thought things in general sounded fine. Tone on things was pleasant for the most part.

The bass was a little twangy. More like a punk tone. It didn't seem to fit this music.

Little pops at :20, :23, :50, 1:18 and other spots.

As far as the concept, it was OK I suppose. But the gradual addition of instruments wasn't enough to compel me to listen. It was just too slow and plodding for my tastes. Sorry.

Very interesting. Nice variety of stuff going on. Good job

Good catches. They are indeed the same mistake repeated since I did the whole song with loops.

I rerecorded it with a darker sound and less gain to minimize the noises.

Sounds better for sure. I'm noticing "something" where the pops were, but I wouldn't describe them as pops anymore. If I wasn't listening for them, I'd never notice anything at all. The bass doesn't seem as twangy.

I'm hearing some jumps in volume at a couple of points where I didn't notice them in the first version.

There is something weird at 2:22. I noticed it in the first version, but didn't mention it. SOmething with a weird stereo spread and almost something I'd call a pop on the left side.

The thing at 2:22 is most likely the echo'd notes almost collapsing into mono since they are incredibly close in pitch. It's really just the same note played twice and panned L/R. Dunno what to do about that :/

Thanks for the listen.

Piano at 1.05 sounds a bit too forward, but later when tons of layers get added, it's okay. I dunno bout this, but would it sound goofy to put some (more?) verb on it when it comes in and then slowly remove that verb as things progress?

How much EQ'ing did you do on this one? How did you get all those overlapping track working together? Did you gate stuff?

I really like this one. It's awesome.

I only HPF'd the guitars and compressed the guitars. The guitar has a bit of verb on it but not much.
As to how I got them to work together, I just adjusted volume levels until they fit and automated one or two end tails of the drawn out notes like the strings. Then I literally strg+D the loops and added something new on every repetition.

I like the idea with the reverb. Kind of have like a 3:1 ratio of reverb:dry with the piano and slowly turn it into 1:3 in favor of the dry signal, eh?

Thanks for the listen.

Something like that, yeah. Just to see. The thing is, with this one, the instruments that come in first are working in a way different mix environment than the ones that come in later on. The early ones are right out there and visible cuz there isn't much else going on, so they have to enter a bit more subtly.

So this is where you've been? Off writing 20-second riffs that repeat? Oh well, at least it's not techno!

The curse of having a better memory than I wish I did... I remember critiquing some other song he did a few months ago where he said he made it under just such circumstances as you describe. Were you making a reference to that?

This is a peaceful little piece. Not bad. And any time a German (Austrian, whatever) makes a song that doesn't involve electronic, pulsating sounds, I'm happy.

womp womp womp womp womp

Thanks for the listen

I was gone doing xmas things :)

I write and record this kind of stuff at home since I find it a lot more relaxing to do than what I play in my band. Contrasts, you know?

I think with home recording too many people are trying to capture some lost (fill in the era here) sound, we have a huge opportunity ot be different. Take old, new and something of ours and make music that is well, unique. Push people push. Don't settle for yesterday, today is new and we should change it.

OK, too much drink, just ignore. :p

It's an interesting instrumental. I don't usually go for instrumentals, it's hard to hold the interest without the obvious centerpiece of a vocal line. This one builds nicely and adds interest as it goes along.

The noise gate on the bass sticks out in the first round of the canon, but gets masked later on. I'm a little distracted by some of the samples (piano, kick, crash). But as a side project and a relaxation exercise, I think it's nice.
