I'd like comments on my new upload, "The Deceiver". The vocal performance really, really sucks (I'll make a re-take when my neighbours allow it :( ), but I need to have this tune - at least partly - out of my system.

I'm prepared for comments on the critical side, so don't necessarily be polite :D .

Thanks a mill in advance

Erik

Excellent acoustic guitars. I love the drum & percussion work here too. Very tasteful. The mix is great, but the kick drum is very undefined somehow. Maybe too boomy. It could use a tad more highs or something. Those strings are cool too. The horns could use some reverb IMO, too piercing compared to the rest of the song. There's all sorts of great stuff here to pick up. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with your vocals. This was excellent. That fake end was surprising and I like it. God damn there's too
much good stuff to mention. Just do something to dig up that
kick drum out of the muddiness. Of course not too much, since
the song isn't heavy metal or anything :D Or maybe you shouldn't
listen to my advice on drums, since I'm too nitpicky. I always
nag about drums anyway. Even on a lot of "real" albums, you know :D

.....man it starts out really good.....great guitar sound.yeah the bass drum sounds kinda low..buti play drums and i cant even get it right so.... .....lol
piano is a little too loud in comp to the vocals...to me....
cool chord changes.....not expected at all....man bring the vocals up ..it sure seems like these lyrics are good i just cant hear enough of em........

cool
jamal:D

Thanks a lot CranOne and Jamal.

You're both right about the kick drum. I'm afraid it's because of the bass (which is actually an electric guitar). When I mute the bass, the kick will be much more clear in the mix.
I tried many things on the bass track (comp, eq settings), it's even panned a bit to give room for the kick, but still...

Among many others things, I REALLY need a real bass !

But thanks again for the comments :) .

Erik

Erik,

At last I get to hear some of your stuff. I must say I really like the sound. I do agree about the bassdrum. It might not be a clash between the bass, it might just be a question of sorting out the frequencies. Try compressing the bass and drop the level to give the bassdrum room to breathe.

I wouldn't drop the level of the piano, just maybe add a bit off reverb to push it further back in the mix. You'll also give it some more space by doing that.

I like that sound of the acoustics but I would also try to mike it as well as going DI like you did.

But overall, nice, nice song and well worth persevering over the mix and sound.

Well done!

PJH.

CrankyOne, sorry that I spelled your name incorrectly. It's not that I don't remember you, I just posted very early in the morning :o .

Peter, thanks a lot for taking your time.
I make a remix when the vocals are done and I'll try to solve the problem with the bass/kick relation. I appreciate your suggestions.

I would really like to mike the acoustic guitar. I've got a decent guitar and decent mic's, but my preamps make the sound worse than the pickup, probably in combination with the room acoustics.

Cool Song. I like the use of spacing concerning the gutiars while the keys sort of drone in the background Sounds good. I thought your vox sounded pretty good. I didn't think the horns (keys) sounded the best, but they're not bad enough to take away from the rest of the song. The song has a contemplating nature to it.

Erik,

I really liked this one. And this vocal is NOT that bad. I think it fits the mood of the song really well. Very creative and interesting piece musically and sonically. Only thing I didn't like was the voice you chose for the solo at 1:48. (horn?) It just sounds too "fake", unless of course thats what you were going for.

P.S. Loved the opening electric guitar.

Twist

Hi SS454 and Twist.
The wind section is a mixture of soundfonts and patches from my softsynth (Reality) and it does sound cheap, but that's what I'll have to do with for the time being.

I know what you mean, but I actually intend to have the vocal sound much more teasing and sarcastic (directed towards the storyteller himself), it's not supposed to be as humourless as it is in this version. To my own ears, it sounds as if I've got a very bad case of the flu, but you can't really be objective to your own voice, can you ? :D

Thanks. I just recently purchased the POD Line 6, that's why there are all these different guitar sounds spread out through the entire song :) :) .

Thanks very much for your comments, both.

I feel your pain. Once I wanted to add a shaker sound to a song I was working on, but didn't have a real shaker, so I filled a jar with some dried beans and used that. It got the point across, but it sounded like a jar full of dried beans! Adventures in Home Recording.Twist

:D :D I've got a very similar experience : I once got fascinated by the sound of a sachet of sugar shaked with the both hands and thought I'd use it in a rythm section.
But, of course, the recording turned out to be the sound of a complete jerk, shaking a sachet of sugar with both hands.
I still dig the sound of a sachet of sugar being shaked , though :D .

this was a good one..

the only thing that didnt sit well with me were those trumpets.. I really liked the vocals and the whole progression is just great.. It was one of those where you forget your listening for mix problems and just get into the tune..

I liked everything about it..

except those damn trumpets! :D

great tune!

Nice song. Nice feel to it. I liked the bass part for some reason.

I thought the lead guitar could have some midrange tamed a bit and sound a little better (at least at the begining of the song). To me the lead vox lacked a bit of emotion. They sounded a bit on the bland side, and maybe a pitch issue in spots.

The trumpets made me think of "The Carpenters" even the song doesn't sound anything close them.

I liked the song and thought it was real creative. Like Chicago, meets Ian Dury.... I liked the acoustic guitar sound you got also. I wont comment on the vocals cause Mine arent that great either, but at least they fit the song....A real Bass and the kicks EQed would really help this mix alot.
Myx

B. Sabbath : I'm sorry you don't like those trumpets. I admit they are cheap sounding, though ;) .

TripleM : Your right, the vocals are terrible. I'll do a new recording as soon as possible.
About the lead guitar : are you referring to the acoustic or the electric ?
Carpenters, eh ?? :D :D . Actually I've always liked them a lot, but I wouldn't count them as one of my major influences :) .

Myx62 : I will work on the bass/kick drum issue when I remix - it does affect the overall sound a lot.

I'm really thankful for the amount of comments on this tune. I didn't expect that at all, especially since it's only a sketch.
Thanks guys.

sketch or not..............

i thought it was a very cool tune!!!! i agree about the vocal's, i like them just the way they sit. i also agree with the trumpet remark's. just ewwwwwww:D i enjoyed it!!!

thanks

peace

I'm writing as I'm listening, I like to do it that way. I really dig the way this starts out, definitely the way I like music to feel. The guitars and keys sound great. I think the bass could come up and be punchier. Cool horn sounds. I like the vocals, what's wrong with them. I think the only thing that I can comment on are the crash sound is kind of weird and repetitive and I'm not that fond of some of the other drum sounds, though I dig the accenting, but that's only my preference. Oh, cool little guitar solo near the end. Overall this sounds damn good and it's quite an original piece, well written. I enjoyed this, thanks  :D

1st off, Horn's almost ruled! A tad more room-type verb with tail
and wee bit upper-mid eq boost and it's there!!! Gits ruled!
Bass perf on point, just slap level down a lil! Feelin' the drummer
real hard which made it a sweet, rhythmic trip! Overall production
from perf's to rec'ding was exceptional!

D@mn, it's peeps like U that make me so jealous!! ;)

Fenderlikinggood , Barometer and MISTERQCUE ,

Thanks a bunch for the praise. You guys are not just being polite, are you ? :D

Misterqcue, could you please explain what frequency range you're referring to by saying upper-mid. My guess would be around 800-1000 Hz, but I'm not really familiar with these terms yet.

Once more, thanks a lot.
