A question I never thought I'd get to ask

I recently recorded, using some $120 AT's, about 12 demos. One of the people I sent my demo to owns/runs a studio, loved the songs, and GAVE me a Neumann M147 for future recording. How rediculously awesome is that?!

Is there anything I need to know about the difference between the two (like, is it ok to still be using the same Mackie DFX/MAudio/Cakewalk Sonar setup as before)?

Yes.

A better microphone is only part of the equation. Until your benefactor is able to provide you with a general upgrade of everything you've been using, use what you have and use it wisely. For example, don't flood the track input from the Neumann with reverb from the Mackie DFX. Leave that for the mix, if at all.

And you didn't get this guy's attention with the quality of the recording, just the quality of the songs.

A Neumann is a mic just like the AT's you used on your demos. The less you let it intimidate you and the more you just get on with the songwriting process the better off you'll be.

I never use the effects on the Mackie. They sound rediculous.

Right, that's what I said.

I'm confused. It sounds like you're implying that with my current setup, the mic isn't going to make much difference in terms of sound?

i dont think he meant dont use it... but yeah the rest isn't really in the same league... but when your ready to upgrade there's one thing you know ya got covered pretty well...

Right, I didn't get the impression that he was saying not to use it at all. It just sounds like maybe, when I get around to plugging this mic in and laying down a track, I shouldn't expect there to be hardly any difference than before?

No, that's not what I'm saying at all.

What I'm saying is use it as just another recording tool. Don't let the fact that it's a Neumann microphone intimidate you. And don't expect one premium mic to solve your recording problems. Whatever you put thru it WILL sound better than the AT's but maybe not so much as the difference in price and obvious quality would lead you to expect.

Just keep doing what you have been doing with the Neumann replacing the AT's. That's almost certainly the advice your benefactor would give you if you asked him or her about how you should proceed from here.

I'd not forget to send that dude a christmas card every year, BTW.
