first just let me say that it is great to know that there are other people out here that have a 788 that i can communicate with!anyway,i am very new at recording and have a couple of questions i would like to ask some 788 users.i am micing an acoustic guitar and i can not get the recording level up to 0.it's staying at about 16 or a little under unless i strum very, very heavily.i am not totally stupid in that i am close enough to the mic and i have the trim set to mic.are there any suggestions?

thanks,

The trim knobs on the 788 are not it's strong suit, that's for sure. Sounds like you are going in direct with a dynamic mic and if so, you can barely get a decent level to record. Also with the trim knobs up they'll tend to hiss.

Most 788 users end up using a condenser mic with a preamp and often outboard compression to bring up levels and overall quality. It won't take a lot of money to bring about dramatic results. Many people are very happy with those $79 Marshall large diaphragm condensers and you can get an ART tube preamp for around the same price. Studio Projects is coming out with a hundred dollar mic I believe called the B-1 that might be worth looking into.

Good luck, hope this helps.

thanks alot philboyd!! i was starting to think something was wrong with my 788.i have already ordered a shure sm57 mic.will that sound good along with the other equipment that you mentioned?

thanks,

The 57 is a great and versitile mic, I've got 2 and a beta 57 for live vocals, but condenser mics are generally a better way to go for recording. Going direct with a 57 to the 788 will still have the trim knobs nearly all the way up to get a decent level, so you may want to make a preamp your first additional purchase. Art, Presonus, and Behringer products will work well. Once you've got good levels with the trim knobs at about the 10 o'clock position you'll be getting the sound you're looking for.

Also, you can get another 6 db boost through the EQ screen

Yes you can. My experience with it is that it's more kick than 6db in the way that it works, so if something is recorded too low to work with other tracks, it's pretty handy.
