a question about monitors

I'm about to get a PowerMac G5 and begin recording with GarageBand (I know, I know, I'll probably upgrade to something better eventually). My question is, what kind of powered monitors should I get? What brands do you recommend for under $200? Thanks in advance for helping out a recording novice!

Thanks for the links! They were interesting and quite helpful. But I'm still not sure about what type of monitors or speakers I would need. Someone on another forum told me that regular computer speakers wouldn't give me an accurate sound for recording and mixing, and that full-range powered monitors were what I needed. What sayeth you?

200 isnt gonna get you much. And you NEED good monitors. Think about it this way. How can you make good decisions with your music (eq, effects) if you cant actually hear what is going on. I suggest the wharfedale diamond pro 8.2s for 300. 300 is going to be about the minimum for real monitors.

Funny you should mention them, I've been looking at the DX4's on the Musician's Friend website.

Not sure. The room I'm planning on using is a long rectangular room, probably 10 to 12 feet across and 40 to 45 feet long.

I would recommend that you mix on what ever you have for the time being,
stereo speakers,boom box,multi media,what ever.
$200 monitors wont be a good buy,no matter who makes them.Save your money and get somthing decent.Your mixing room is pretty narrow,your
ears will thank you for buying a good set of nearfields.I would reccomend
the yamaha msp5's.They sound better than anything M-audio ever made and they dont fatique your ears as bad.

But the mac's speaker output is not a Line Level, or is it? You can put the line out into your home stereo and save your $ for the Big Purchase when you upgrade from Garageband in a few months actually my buddy uses it to good effect and he has ProTools on a PC and MOTU's DP4 on an iMac, but still uses Garageband for small easy projects. You may surprised...

i use 2 huge old jensen speakers and a 30 year old hitachi stereo reciever for monitors, and they work pretty well for me. we had the stereo already and got the speakers for free at the dump when someone was going to throw them away because the cloth screen was torn! haha. yea for trash!

What are your opinions on the Wharfedale DP8.1A Diamond Pros? Any good? Or should I just shell out the extra cash for a pair of 8.2's? I was also looking at the Event TR5-N's, opinions? Thanks.
