What's a program where I can write out a score for MIDI drums, and it will use sound modules from whatever program, and I would be able to mixdown, implementing those sound modules?

Thanks!

By "sound modules" do you mean wavefiles of drumsounds?

If you have Sonar 2 XL, you can use the DR-008 for that. We have Battery, and any softsampler such as Vsampler would do the job.

How would I actually go about recording these parts? For example, let's say I write a drum MIDI score in Cakewalk. How do I implement a program to use drum samples (or "modules") so that, in mixdown, those drum samples will be part of the recording?

Are you using Sonar (version 1 or 2) or Pro Audio 9 (or older)?

If you're using Sonar, get a sampler as a DXi. You use the sampler as you would use any softsynth.

If you're using PA9, then you would need to send the MIDI-data from PA9 to the sampler-app using a virtual midicable.

What machine, soundcard, software do you have?

I have a Sony Vaio 600 Mhz w/ 128 RAM and Aureal audio soundcard. For now, I'm just getting to use to using this stuff, but I plan on upgrading my soundcard to a Delta 1010 one of these days. I just tried using Battery and Fruity Loops, both which confused me even more. How do I set up a virtual MIDI cable to connect each software? BTW, I'm using CW 9, not Sonar. What program would work best for REALISTIC rock style drums? The ones I heard on Fruity Loops were not all that great, and I was lost, using Battery. Thanks for your help!

Well, I don't know... I use Sonar and therefore DXi such as LiveSynth Pro DXi for soundfonts and DR-008. You could get the LiveSynth as a standalone program, read here. To connect the two together you need a program like Midi Yoke.

A great soundfont is GoldDrums, you'll find it at www.hammersound.net

With my soundcard, soundfonts don't work, right? It is not selectable in Cakewalk. Oh, I just wish Cakewalk would mixdown my MIDI file!

Well, to get REALISTIC rock style drums takes more than best software and sound module. It's about how good you sequence the source. Fruity Loops and Battery are good for doing that job if you master 'em. Think like a drumer, and feel the beat/emotions just like you play real drums. Whatever you choose, it's only machine. The beat is yours to give... I think almost everyone of us were there, unsatisfied. But we spent more time to learn the trick. :D I know it's tough and need more patience, but that's the price we should pay. :)
Anyway, Are you not satisfied by THE SOUND (the wave) ? or you don't like IT SOUNDS (the groove) ?

You're urgently need SONAR my friend. Believe me... ;) If you've never tasted it, try the downloadable demo version from www.cakewalk.com. :)

I use a Sony Vario with soundfonts. You are trying to run before you walk here a little bit. With your setup, you need a software program to manage your soundfonts because as you rightly say, your present soundcard has no direct control over them.

Live synth pro is a good soundfont management program to get. It can be opened up in sonar as a DXi Synth and then loaded up with your soundfonts. These include some very realistic drum sounds, the thread that Moskus pointed you to is a classic method for drums.

Soundfonts are a whole subject in themselves, it will take you some time to get your head around it all.

There are also a great number of drum loops out there on the www which you can import as a wav file and then loop to your hearts content. Just seach the web for drum loops.

Fruity loops can be used as a stand alone drum synth or opened up in Sonmar as a VST DXi instrument. It too can also be loaded with soundfonts, which I also use, because as you have found out, the set range of drum sounds in FL is limited and does not sound very real.
But like everything, as Mr Argo has posted, to get a real sounding drum beat without playing the drums requires patience and a learning curve. The quickest solution is the drum loop method.

Have fun!

Excellent, Paul! One problem, though.... He's using PA9, so DXis is out of the question.
