But you are correct AFAIK. The point I was trying to make was that I've heard people debate this. 'A' is the answer, but one guy I know, a guitar teacher by trade and a Berklee grad tried to argue it was in E because it starts and ends on that walking E guitar/bass riff. So I'm led to wonder how the software would make certain distinctions since many songs begin with the I(one) chord.

Exactly. Even if it ended on E, which it doesn't, the scale sets the key, not the start and end cord.
