A pro-soccer team anthem? A little diddy from the studio.

I could see everything in the mix working in an American sports stadium apart from the lead vocals. I don't think they sound weak, just too low in the mix for the purpose - how would a touch more volume and a boost to the mids lift them?

Mind you, this is what my team play before every game, so I don't think one size necessarily fits all...

Doing my best to keep this true, my friend.

So... I made a new mix, and in doing so, I figured something out. The drum track was buried in this mix for a good reason. It sucks. I can't play fast triplets on a single kick, so I use my double pedal, and I don't have consistent power in using both kicks so slowly. So... I made a new mix from the ground up and it sounds better (at least to my ears), but the drum performance is painfully sloppy. I've got until late February to get this right, so - I will add to this thread as I eventually *WILL* improve my kick speed, re-track the drums using a single triplet beater, and make this song freakin' shine.

Any comments on the new mix? I changed *everything*.

Mix 7

Meh, I'm still not feeling the drums. I think it's a little better, but not much. I mean, I can hear em in my head how I'd want them to sound, but that's just me. I think the snare is a little better. The toms and kick are still lacking body. I'm still getting a lot of mud from the guitars and bass. The vocals need to be cleaner and out front more. I'm gonna DL it and give it a "car test" though. Lol.

Technically, come on dude, you gotta be able to play this one-footed. This is really tame, laid back drumming. I suck and I could play this one footed. :D :p

If you suck, then I'm in serious trouble, dude.

Okay.. Lots of info to give on this song. First off, I got a new snare - a Pork Pie Lil' Squealer steel drum, and I love it. It's got remo ambassador / hazy reso heads. I got a completely new DAW - Harrison mixbus - and am in the process of learning how to use it. I also got a new mastering chain.

Point being, this is one of the first songs I'm attacking with all this new crap. I might be posting this mix prematurely, because it now has really, really shoddy drum work on it, and will be replaced soon. I really want opinions on the new mix, though. The drums include the new snare, and were mixed using the new DAW and mastering chain.

I'm interested in opinions on the mix in general.

Thanks, guys!

RSL 9

Congrats on the new snare. Those lil squealers are pretty bad ass.

Sounds better than I remember. Drums definitely seem meatier. Vocals are much clearer. I still think you need more close-mic presence though. And it seems like you're getting a lot of bleed through the snare mic maybe? I think I'm hearing a lot of cymbal bleed coming through the center. Gate that bitch or work on your mic placement.

I'd like to hear a little cleaner seperation between the guitars and bass. It's still kind of a mash of sound. It's not terrible, but definitely not pro quality yet.

I love the guitar sound. Bass seems to be sitting just right.

I like the gang vocals, they seem to fit in an "anthem." But the lead vocal doesn't, at least to my ear. It's kind of tame and intimate. It's just a a little too laid back to get my fist pumping in the air. They're a little tough to understand.

Vocals don't come in at the same time at 1:08. They're off by just a little too much for me.

I think if you gave some of the low end to the snare you'd feel it in your chest. As it is, it doesn't quite have enough "umph."

The guitars in RSL9 sound better than the other mix and the toms are nice and loud. If this is going to be played outdoors through PA speakers, you can use that to your advantage in that the mix doesn't have to be too hi-fi and you can be more bombastic with it than you would otherwise. e.g you could augment the kick with a low frequency 909 type sample, and something similar to get the snare cutting through. You could parallel compress the bejesus out of the drums. I also agree the Trip, the vocal needs to be more aggressive and shouty. If this gets adopted the crowd are going to drown the vocal out anyway with their own singing

Mix 9 is real good!

Here's where I think the drums wimp: The snare hit is a grace note standing alone. It sounds girlie. Hits on the ones [instead of the ands-of-twos] would cudgle the opposition and zing darts at them. MH freakin' O. Arrrggghhhh!

But it's got great sounds, and is righteously riotous.

The song itself is golden. I can dig that chant at a match.

Maybe the drums don't jig enough. Not enough of a Celtic stomp going on. Not enough beer-swillin' Celtic hoolifunk.

Very cool idea. Thanks.

Thanks for the listen, Greg. New (and final) version coming down the pipe. ...and yes - this lil squealer is turning out to be a very recordable snare... Lovin' it! I hope this new mix takes care of the low-end mash...

Thanks for the comment! New version took care of the chant timing.

Thanks for the comment, Bull.. The vocals are what they are and hopefully the team will like em'. As far as the no hi-fi thing, this is gonna be available for people to download and listen to where ever they like, so the mix has gotta shine, but you're right. If it was going to be played only in the stadium, I wouldn't care quite as much.

Er... Sorry for the late reply, Jeff. I wish I understood what you meant with the snare hits. Could you clarify a bit?

Sorry, I just found that really funny and I don't know why. :D

Thanks for the comment, even if it had nothing to do with the song. I'll take what I can get!

That snare has a nice snap to it and cuts through nicely. Congrats on the new acquisition !

Yup! New snare is rockin' my world.

Okay... After much ado, I've come up with a final mix. I can't work on this anymore or I'll get sick of the song. Hopefully it's a step in the right direction, at least. The client loves this mix, so.. That's a plus.

Also - sorry for the delayed response to the last few posts. Not quite sure how I missed em'.

...and now, I present you with - Mix 10
