A prediction on DAW's

Here is my prediction!!!! In a year or two, companies like Fostex, Tascam, Yamaha, Zoom are going to put out standalone DAWs about the size of a large laptop (thicker to accomodate a 3.5" drive) that will have faders for 12to16 tracks, with a plug in mouse. The top of the unit that covers the faders when not in use will be a 12 - 14 inch screen that folds out like a laptop screen does. SO, you will then have a self-contained DAW, with a big screen, that has been totally designed for digital recording, and has just about everything going for it. This could easily be done for under a grand and I think they'd sell like crazy... Companies could release their own proprietary plug-ins, or standardize for clones (unlikely).

Sounds great to me. I'll be interested in 5 years when they come down below $500.

Have you not seen the Akai DSP24? Pretty close to what you're talking about. The VS2480 has connections for a monitor and mouse.

You is pretty smart. I'll have to check it out.

I've seen the Akai... Actually, it's huge (24track) and the screen is about 10% of the unit. What I've got in mind is something like an MR8/VF80 sized unit with a lid "top" lcd screen similar to a laptop. So, just as you open a laptop, accessing the screen with the keyboard underneath, you'd open the "VF90" to find the faders/buttons underneath, and you'd have a 13" screen to work with! Such an arrangement would be easy to design with current technology and wouldn't add any significant size/weight. I'm surprised it hasn't been done actually.

Leave it to fostex ...they probably already have one in design. I think it will have a CD-RW drive instead of a 3.5" though. And maybe something like a 80gig HD would be sweet! OH yeah... maybe by then, I'll be recording better LOL... could that be enough justification to buy it?

If Fostex are reading this, can I ask them to add a "Make it Sound Good" button:D

Great idea!! While they're at it, maybe incorporate one of these... I need it in the worst way!

edit: Well, it's a talent boost stomp box...but the file is too big, can't attach it! Weird, I got it from this BBS somewhere... now all of a sudden it's too big!

I agree, that would definitely be cool...
And a good sound card and burner and ins and outs and lots of goodies, and a beer tapper...hehe

I'll bet they got something like that in the works.. I'd get one.....

 :D:p

I'm probably dinosaurer than you. There are quite a few of us geezers around here.
VOXCHAT is the homerec chatroom. here's the link:
There can't be any spaces or punctuation in the nickname you use.

Thanks Lt. Bob, I'll check it out when I get home from Ohio. Gonna try and drag my dinosaur drummer (haven't worked together in almost 20 years) out of the bar over there long enough to do some trax for me.

Well, one thing you need consider is cost. Who's gonna pay for a digital 8 track with big screen when for the same money, you could get more tracks and smaller or no screen. Personally, I see more DAW's having VGA and mouse/keyboard ports built in. Or better integration with PC's.. such as a firewire and usb ports that will allow the DAW to show up as another "drive' in Windows or OSX vs. just transfering data via the firewire or usb port. For example using Cool Edit Pro to do fine editing of a file stored on the DAW unit without 'flying' the file back and forth from DAW to PC.

Well, it seems to me that screens are running pretty cheap these days, so putting a 10" or 12" as a fold-up "lid" on a VF80 would be a snap. It's amazing, because Pentium II laptops can be had for $2-300., and the screens on these would be perfect for a small DAW. So a VF80, with a 10"screen would be what, $799. as opposed to $699.?

As much as I rely on several PC's for work, the ability to go start to finish on a portable DAW with a laptop size screen would be excellent. Given what DAW's cost anyway, it surprises me that manufacturers have been stuck in a 2" screen paradigm for so long. Imagine a laptop with faders and pan pots instead of keys!

Roland are nearly getting there....

How to tell if you are a dinosaur:
You watched the Beatles the FIRST time they were on the Ed
Sullivan show.
You remember the Kent State Massacre
You remember the Fender Telecaster BASS
You remember Kustom amps and PAs with the roll 'n' tuck
naugahyde covers

Now if you remember the time Elvis was on Ed Sullivan you are older than a dinosaur--you qualify for trilobite status.
