A pair of Rode NT3's or should I wait for these?

Depends on what you'll be using it for.. I've used the NT-3, and compared it to other mics, and I can't say it impressed me in any way. For drum overheads, I found it no better than AKG C1000, on accousti guitar is sounds a bit lifeless and dull, and on vox it sounded scoped and a bit harsh... BUT.. It once was AMAZING on micing a guitar cab.

Note: This isn't the "end all" about the NT-3. These are my impressions, and they're all but scientifical/professional.

Addition:
Of course you can wait for the new line of Rode mics, but don't assume anything about them.. Check them out with critical ears...

tell us:

how much u wanna spend
what u wanna use the mics for

i bet we can pair you with some GREAT mics now....although i think Rode got their shit together with the NTK and NT1000.....awesome mics that i cant afford....i still feel bad trying them out because momma always told me in the toy store "if you cant afford to buy it, dont play with it"....

I was going to use them for stereo recording acoustic guitars, various percussion & as drum overheads. $300 Max is the budget.

Thanks for the advice.

for stereo acoustic guitar and overheads id say Marshall MXL603's, probably about $150 for a pair....probably good for the various percussion also.....

I got some NT3's not long ago and I have been pretty happy with them. I actually like the sound for vocals...but, I mainly got them for drum overheads. At about 300/pair the price was right...be interesting to see the nt4's and 5's though. one of them had a mini plug or something..which..didn't exactly turn me on.

I'm interested in that stereo Rode mic too. One of the best drum overhead sounds I ever got was with a Neumann stereo mic... Not that I think that the Rode would be as nice as the Neumann, but the choices for a single stereo condenser for music recording on a decent budget are pretty limited. Neumann makes one, and Royer makes a stereo ribbon... It'll be nice to have a (what I assume will be) "budget" option.

I believe the NT-3 has a 3/4" diaphragm, which would be considered a mid-sized. The 1/2" diaphragm on the NT-5 fits the most common definition of a small diaphragm (same as Neumann, Oktava, Schoepps, AKG, et al.). Can't tell you much about any of the Rodes, though.

I'd go with Gidge's idea of the MXL 603's and I'd add a pair of Behringer ECM 8000's for about $70 for the pair. Then you would have a pair of cardoid and a pair of omnis to choose from and it would only cost you about $220 for BOTH pairs!!

That is what I'd do also. Actually I got one of each and have been very happy. Both of these mics have been recommended by Harvey as "great bang-for-the-buck" mics.

You get a lot of versatility for $220-$230.

the main question with the NT4 is

"do you want two mikes fixed in an XY pattern????"

for live maybe but I'd prefer two separate mikes thankyou ;)

cheers
