A nice decently priced head?

Slowing becoming un-noob.
I'm looking into getting a new head because the one I have now is terrible. I'm looking for something under 300 dollars..but up to 400 I MIGHT be able to deal with. I just need a basic overdrive that sounds good, and not shit like line 6 tones...(I have a spider II 150Watt Head)....and also the head should have some reverb.


So has anyone had any experience at all with some heads that I could get like that?

Could get a Peavey windsor, or a used Peavey valveking for that amount...all tube heads, sound pretty good.

Thanks man. That Peavey Windsor looks great, and sounds great from the reviews.
 
If I were you I'd give the Windsor a go, never heard anything bad about it. If you do get back to us and give your impressions of the amp.

I know it's not a head, but the old Ampegs like the Jet, the Gemini, and the Reverberocket are just absolutely wonderful and actually in your price range. I have a Gemini II, just an incredible amp and that big Jensen 15... nice. Definitely loud enough to play out with.
 
in all honesty, i've heard a couple of the line 6 spider amps and thought they sounded pretty decent

maybe you could benefit from a good OD pedal before the amp??
 
Not sure what the price is, but my guitarist got a Crate BV120H Blue voodoo head, and it sounds AMAZING. I might be an idiot, but I really enjoy that sound... It may warrant a look... *shrugs*

They're decent sounding amps and record pretty ok but the guy I know that had one constantly had to take it to a tech to fix stuff. It was always having weird issues.

I.ve got a Valve King and it sounds great but it has some design flaws. Pots go right into the circuit board so if you snap off a pot you need a new board.
jacks are crap too, all plastic. Great sound but not too roadworthy

The line 6 clean channel is amazing, that's about it. All of the types of distortion sounds all have a backround static "shckshshhhchskchkshhshhshchsh" sound. If you know what I mean. It sucks for recording and playing live just sounds like crap in a way.

I have an overdrive pedal that is working for me right now. But eventually I'm going to upgrade to a bigger and better amp. So I'm looking into heads.

But yeah, Line 6 isn't the worst I suppose, I can get a couple DECENT tones out of it, but not really what I'm looking for.

They look uber retro. Ha. Look like fun, but too much money for me for just a combo. Thanks anyways though! :D

Im a big fan of the ValveKing....... never played through the head only model, but the combos have killer and versatile tone..... Goes from fender bell like clean to fender mild dirt overdrive...... to a super crunchy distorted modern gain sound.

Heres the link...... thought they were cheaper than this......... hmmmmmmm maybe ebay or somethin?

I test drove the Windsor and what sent me away from it was the lack of really clean clean on it. It had crunch at the lowest settings, and the rep confirmed that it was like that. It was nice other than that, tho. I tried a Line 6 Spider III, and it crapped out and the replacement did too, both within two weeks. Oh well. Live and learn....

So how much crunch is there when it is as clean as it can get?
Is there a place on the internet where I could hear some sound clips or something?

are you sure its not your guitar thats making the noise?


i'd say check out Traynor also, i have a YCV80 all tube combo and it sounds really nice. i'm not sure how much the heads are though, possibly a bit above your price range.
 
The type of head would really depend on your style of music. Many amps will do country to classic rock tones, but if you are going for a really forward and heavy sound, then your options diminish a bit.

For a solid state head, I would recommend finding a used Ampeg VH-140C. They can pretty much keep up with whatever tone you are after. They usually run in your price range. I've had one in my studio for years now. It's outlasted the Boogie Rectifier and a Randall.

Yeah, traynor heads are pretty expensive..I've looked into them..

And also, no it's not my guitar. My friend has a very nice fender showmaster I believe is the model, and yeah. Very nice guitar compared to mine. And yeah...the sounds is very evident...I mean you have to search for it, but when recorded you can hear it more definitely and it hurts to hear...but yeah.

Yeah, I'm going for nothing too heavy. Sort for a good clean, and a nice crunch when needed. Style of music is punk I would call it. Hope that helpswhoever.

Also, the Ampeg VH-140C is hard to find, found one on ebay but I can't afford it right now. But yeah. Thanks for the help though

For solid state a used Marshall VS-100 or Randall G2 series might also fit your bill.
