I like the tune. Vocals seem a bit in the back. I would like to hear them a bit more. The feel to the song is really nice. It's a bit somber, and down. Not real dark, but not upbeat. The tone of the instruments really fits that. Later on, the vocals seem to sit a bit better in the mix. Strings at about 3:00 sound nice.
Cool song.

Vocals could be a tiny bit more "up front" mainly towards the first half of the song (and I mean only a bit). Funny, they seem to sit well in the mix but I find myself straining for the words - maybe it's a reverb thing. Very nice singing though - melodic and smooth.

No problems with the instruments....the guitars are nicely played and panned - I like the effects on the guitars. Bass is fat and full. Cymbals and kick good - not much snare but that's ok for this type of music. The cello is right on in this mix sitting well in the mix.

This is a great song - nice writing/arrangement/playing by all. Definitely a dreamy song for listening to or dancing to. Reminiscent of some 60's music - maybe Jefferson Airplane.... Good one!

Ta Muchly

Dogman & ido1957,
Ta for the feedback. I'll bring the voical up in the 1st 1/2 & lift the snare a tiny bit. I actually re EQ'd the snare just before uploading & pulled the highs down quite a bit - again h/phones & my over sensitivity. I usually monitor with a pair of ARs but it was late & I didn't want to disturb the neighbours.
Before I remix though would someone please comment on the ride cymbal? I'm rather sensitive to it too for some reason. Perhaps because I last listened to it with h/phones/cans on, (the wife was watching telly again).
I'll attempt ot get a remix uploaded in 24hrs from now - last week of holidays so I have the time to play about. Let me know if it addresses the concerns.
Again many thanks for the constructive comments.
Cheers

Remix done

Hi folks,
I've followed your suggestions - except & this'll make me look a real Gumby, there's no snare drum, it's bass/kick & hi hat + ride & crash only.
I also did a mix using an "Omnisonic 801 Imager" & the results were really good EXCEPT it unleashed the beast that is an unbridled 'cello so I won't be uploading that one - though I'll tweak the 'cellos & see if I can get it under control with another run.
Cheers

Very nice arrangment. The singer has a beautiful voice and draws you into the song. I like the use of the cello, though it has some wandering intonation. :D

Mix-wise, it's working well for the vocal but the instrumental tracks would come across better if they had higher clarity IMO.

Back for a listen to the remix. Both mixes sound like they have parts that are competing for EQ space in the lows and low mid's. I like the use of sustaining instruments in the arrangement, but the verb added is smearing the sound I think. Not familiar with the 801 Imager, except that it's sometimes referred to as a "magic box", which makes me distrust it. :D

I'd try to carve out EQ space for each part and keep them from competing and building up, and cut the verb on everything but the vocal, and I'd keep it to a short verb there.

Same haunting and melodic vocals - this time smoother cause of the added effect - which is good. Cello is really well mixed behind the vocals in the verses/chorus. Cello could come up a touch on the solos. The reverb is really heavy at the beginning but then you get used to it as it progresses...is that the Omnisonic? The guitars sound better to me - brighter, more chorus? The reverb suits the guitars. I'm getting a bit of distortion on the when the chorus builds in around 3:20. Not sure if it's just my PC speakers though...
This sounds like Moody Blues with the guitar sounds, melody and chord patterns. Like a story put to music....I like this mix better than the first version...stronger and brighter...nice ending with the sustained note....

Edit - I tried some EQ "carving" on my last tune and it seemed to have helped a bit (though I'm still a newb to mixing). If I can find the chart I'll PM you the link...I think I have it on my work PC....

Ray, I'd get rid of some of the verb myself. The recording sounds good enough to stand on it's own, dry. Try that, and SLOWLY add any FX. I'd like to hear this dry...totally dry. Then see if you might want to add some FX. It has a cool, spacey sound, but might be better a bit drier. Just my opinion, but might be worth a try. See if that adds some dynamics, and gives the tune a more dramatic feel. And I will say, not a bad tune by any means. Just suggesting that you let more of the natural feel through, and see ho it stands up. You will probably still want some verb on the parts, as it adds an interesting effect, that is an integral part of the song. Just try it a bit drier. Maybe bring the vocals up a hair. Not a lot, as they sound good, but make them more of the focal point.

These are all small nits. Just a bit more dynamics, and the tune should really stand up. But, all said, I do like the somber feel. It has a good vibe. Mysterious.

I'll endeavour to follow up

Hi folks,
Thanks very much for the constructive critz.
The 801 adds someEQ, synthetic reverb, panning based on EQ & whatever else.
It can MAKE a mix or MIX A MESS. It's a take it or leave it option really.
I've noticed, generally, that it adds crispness to guitars but smudges vocals.
Much of this is born out by your comments.
As I actually recorded the whole thing 1 track at a time on cakewalk I'll be able to deconstruct the mix & do a Finnegan. I like the idea of removing all effects & re building.
I'm doing a bit of reading on giving things their own space via EQ so will try that too.
I'm back at work after 5 week hol. so it'll be a "when I get to it..." task but I'm looking forward to it now that I have more suggestions to work to. Mind you, if any of you run a prog that is cakewalk bundle compatible I'd LOVE to send you the data & audio on CDR to have a whirl at mixing.
Cheers & again thanks Dogman Tomothy & Ido1957.
