a new version of my "iso cabinet-experiment" song:
here's the link:

newest version of "Redwood Road"

I purchased a Demeter silent speaker isolation cabinet a couple of weeks back.
i have a post in my "cd project" diary that outlines the info on it.

anyway...
i've been experimenting, looking for guitar sounds....
seems that using my audio tecnica 4033 is winning, over the venerable old sm57.

i've been using this one song, "Redwood Road", as a template to experiment with the iso cab versus the pod.

the original version, was all pod.
the 2nd version, was with the iso cab and the 57.

this version, is with the AT4033.

on the 2nd version, i kept the original pod clean guitar part, which some people think sounds too clean, to sterile..
the 3rd version now has a miced clean guitar part, which is actually using a blackface deluxe amp model, set to crunchy clean.....
the first half of the distorted solo features my strat hybrid, the 2nd half features a Koa Carvin TL60.....

After i recorded this, i did "surgery" on my iso cab. ;) ;) ;)

story is in the diary......

it's kinda cool, how just changing a couple of (fairly) small things, causes changes in the sound, and that can be very inspiring...

i'm still working hard, at trying to dial in the sound....
and it'll probably take the entire recording of my new cd, to figure it out..

if anyone here is interested in the experiments and the progress, let me know, i'll be happy to share whatever i learn......

Well, I'm no expert, but I'd say that's a pretty sweet guitar tone. You make me want to break my POD.

thanks liquid

i'll tell you, experimenting with an isolation cabinet has been very fun...
very informative...

it's a new toy, so it's got all that vibe to it...
and, it's helped me dial in more of what i want out of my guitar sound..
more interaction with the amp and the speaker... more touch sensitivity...

it IS different, trying to learn how to track with your speaker in a box...

but not really much different than having to track in a control room with cans on, or listening through monitors....

the iso cab- post surgery....

when i first got the iso cab, and first heard it, i thought "this is totally worth the money".

but i also looked at the dacron insulation that lined the entire cabinet, and i thought "i can do better".

so, i went online, purchased 36 sq ft of 2" Acoustic Wedge Foam....
12"X12"X2" squares....

so, i spent sunday afternoon, stripping out all the dacron insulation (man, that stuff was put in really well!) and prepping the surfaces for spray-adhesive gluing in the insulation.

i had to block off the speaker, and wrapped the cab around the access door for any sprayover, and starting cutting out pieces of the wedge foam, to fit in just right.
i cut out sections for the handles, the speaker wires, the mic cable, and the microphone mount.
every inch of the inside of that thing is covered now....
looks like a anechoic chamber in there!

hm, kinda suprised by the lack of interest.....

for years, i've been thinking about an isolation cabinet.

i figure, there's a lot of guys out there that could use one.

just kinda suprised, that's all.

Very sweet recording, sounds pro. What kind of equipment you use?

some of the equipment was outlined in the thread...

Demeter isolation cabinet, pod xt, output power-amp setting into 2x12, no cab or mic sims, into a mesa boogie mark2b head via the effects return (bypasses the preamp section so the boogie becomes a simple power amp)

this is miced by a audio technica 4033.....
into either a ART DPS set to neutral, or a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic pre, into the digital convertor portion of the ART DPS.....
that goes digital into a vs-1880 recorder...

the bass line, and the drums, were all recorded using ACID and discrete drum loops, and this was mixed in the pc, burned to 16-bit redbook, and brought into the vs as a starting point....

I love the guitar tone, Gonzo. Excellent playing as well.
