a new diddy

This one I mixed down yesterday and I'm looking for opinions on the mix, recording, structure, playing, whatever. The guitar is a little loose in parts, but I left the mistakes in to keep it raw. I wanted this to be a very dirty, angry, and wounded tune. Anyway, here's the link. It's called Tender Golden Friend.

well...this certainly doesn't match the face on your avatar!

kinda like the "Cars" gone on steroids.
the very beginning sound effect is cool...but might get drowned out by the cymbal.
yeah..there are a couple "clams"....that really should be fixed...eh?
nice "wobbly vocals."
Straining to hear the kick drum...
great sound on the lead gtr ... but maybe too similar to the vocal "wobbly" sound...however both are unique in their own right. I think you might need to make the decision..one or the other...but not both effects....just because they are tooo alike.
Vocals nice and clear and upfront.
killer bridge sound at 2:14.....oops...it was an outro/ending!!!
At the very end..after the cutoff....I hear a small click....right immediately after the song ends. Hopefully not in your .wav file mixdown.

Nice "dirty, wounded, angry" tune.....but fix the clams ...it is a recording afterall....not a error playback machine

Hey thanks for the feedback mix! You may not appreciate it but you probably won't be the only one to scoff at my attitude toward little mistakes and imperfections, but I really like little flubs as long as they don't totally take away from the song. I think they add a certain character and put the song at a level that the average Joe can relate to. Hell I've even gone through painstaking efforts to ADD a mistake to a song that was previously too perfect! Stupid? Maybe. Who knows? Really the only artist I've heard that sometimes does that is Beck, but hell he get away with almost anything. I'm at the point where I will be going in to the pro studio to record and I'm trying to make the final decision on the mistakes. I think it will be on a case by case basis.

But you have to know that it's not that I don't care about the sound of the music, I really do! It's just one of those things.

Yeah the wobbly vocs in the chorus will need to have that effect changed I think. Thanks again. Good review.

I've never held anything back on my opinions on a tune posted in this clinic be they good, bad or indifferent, and those of you that know me on this board I'm sure can attest to that. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't need to be handled with kid gloves. I am genuinely interested in your opinion, whatever it may be.

I like the punk feel to this tune...I think mixmkr nailed it again...but I do like it....as far as adding mistakes, I think that's rediculous...It reminds me of my buddy's who used to make hardcore demos and copy them from one cassette to another and keep doing it until it sounded raw and shitty enough....I listened to both of your tunes and thought they were both cool....

Man this reminds me of growing up! It reminds me for some reason of old David Bowie, and I mean that as a compliment.

This is really good. I like the crazy little vocal trick during the chorus. I like the live feel of the guitar.

I am not used to the space you used, but it gets the message across quite well. I just picture all the players and a very small room or barn jamming out.

That sound that you effected with your voice is quite cool. It sounds a bit disjointed though. Maybe you should place it in the center right on top of the regular voice.

The mix is nice, but it seems that the top is rolled off. I wonder how it would sound with a tad more top.

This is cool.

I especially like the dirty/clean transistions of the gits.

That effect (bubble effect) is a bit upfront though, out of place, like it's layered overtop of the original recording. i.e. 'fake'.

The music is too sophisticated to be punk, a bit of that feel for sure. 60'ish, excellent, that's not an easy thing to do. I think it's great, very catchy.

Good singing! Reminds me of Bowie a bit as well.

I've been listening to this for days wondering how this could be improved.

My only complaint was that "underwater" vocal effect you used. But that's a pretty subjective criticism. Also that clapping noise that started around 2:13 didn't sit well with me. Again- very subjective. The rest of the effects fit well.

I liked that soft effect at the very start like some electric motor winding out.

Looking for commercial comparisons I find it to be The Cars do Devo. I hope you understand the magnitude of that compliment!

1:14->1:16 is gold, GREAT sound from those guitars in a commercial sense.

I love the vox stuff in the chorus, and the song is an overall keeper.

I'd isolate the kick, add a bit of pre-verb and verb to get that "p*hum", maybe add a string bridge at the very end into your next song.

I hate posting a song then putting it back in the meat grinder, but then again a song is never finished it's only abandoned! We worked on this a bit last night and I think will undergo some cosmetic surgery over the weekend. I totally forgot that we never recorded the toms or the cymbals!!!

doc- that "clapping" noise was actually the drums heavily compressed and EQ'ed to an AM radio sound. The Cars do Devo, eh? That's whack! That's why I like it.

that means that the mix is nice,very balanced, but it seems like you slapped a high cut filter on the stereo master. IMHO, it would sound more clear with some top(ie high end).
